After about 50 miles of driving, I noticed this sound.
How bad is this? It didn't seem to affect the drive. I only noticed it when I stopped and the music was off.
Thank you
Is your A/C compressor on or off. If it's on then maybe the A/C clutch is hanging up. If it's off then you'll have to wait for somebody with your 740 to chime in.

The AC was off at the time of recording. It was on when the car was started, but turned off within 10 seconds.
The AC button was still pressed, but the blower motor was turned off.
This video was a minute or two after the car was started.
Will driving the car regularly for a couple of days damage something here?
Thanks
you have to check a bit more where the noise comes from. Use a mechanics stethoscope https://www.harborfreight.com/Mechan...ope-63691.html

A mechanic found that it is my water pump. It seems both my water pump and auxiliary water pump are bad.
The water pump itself seems to be a pretty labor intensive repair. It looks like the coolant needs to be flushed again to fix the aux water pump, as well?
A mechanic is looking to charge $800+ USD. This is for parts and labor. Would this sound about right?
Thanks
I do not know the $/hour they charge in your area for labor.
Parts: let's take FCPEURO prices, not dealer prices:
water pump 11510007042 approx. $100 - 120 depending on brand
thermostat approx. $30
recommendable also now to change the belt for the water pump $ ?
some new coolant $ ?
new belt tensioner?
maybe also a new hose from water pump to radiator , BMW Radiator Hose Upper - OEM Rein 11531741408 ~ $15
Aux Water Pump - 64118390063 $197.98 , here the same Hella for $128 http://oemparts4export.com/new-bmw-6...r-system-hella
Time involved for a pro shop for an M60 I do not know, here is a DIY for the water pump replacement for the M70 and he talks about 6 hours for a DIYer http://bmwe32.masscom.net/sean750/wa.../waterpump.htm
but can be done faster, provided nothing breaks.

So after reading here I'm wondering if I have an Aux water pump in my M30 motor. I see it here on Real OEM but have never come across it in my car. I know where my heater valve is up by the firewall on the driver's side but what's this part here. https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/sho...46#64118390063

Your car has one, difficult to see, it is located below the heater valves. See here http://bmwe32.masscom.net/johan/wate...tervalves.html
easiest to see/check if you have one: look at the one pic where it says: Now undo the connector on top of the the heater valves and the connector to the aux waterpump wich is located to the left of the heater valves.
That plug you should see without disassembling anything. Here a pic of the plug, 2 wires, green and brown https://www.ecstuning.com/b-genuine-...p/64118390063/
The usual problem with these aux water pumps is that the plastic hose connection breaks with age and then you have a high volume of coolant loss.
Also with age the bottom plastic part of the aux water pump gets cracks where the aux water pump motor is inside, then small amounts of coolant loss are noticed and many cannot find the leak point because the aux water pump is hidden under the heater valves.
You also notice a change in heater temperature when the aux water pump is broken, as it then depends on the water pump driven by the pulley and that depends on the RPM of the engine.
The aux water pump is independant from engine RPM and pumps always the same volume thru the heater core once the heater is switched on, something around 900 l/h.
Do not use cheap aux water pumps made in China, desaster, I posted that here http://www.bimmerboard.com/forums/posts/1262171/

Very interesting. One of the few parts in sight that I have not had replaced. I'm guessing I've had no problem or small coolant loss is because I never use the heater. A/C is on 100% of the time. When I had the radiator replaced a few months ago (crack in Auto Transmission cooling connection) we had to put the heater on full while pouring in BMW blue coolant. Mechanic had me put the heat on full while bleeding the system. I had no idea if it would work or if it did work if I would be able to get back to ice cold A/C. Heater worked fine and after bleeding thirty seconds or so later was on full cool again. I always check coolant level and all is good. Thanks for that.

Just for info, how to change the aux water pump from a German E34 forum, time required approx. 30 minutes http://www.e32-schrauber.de/bmw/date...asserpumpe.pdf
coolant circuit in an M60 showing the coolant flow http://www.e32-schrauber.de/bmw/daten/motor_m60/m60.pdf

Based on your numbers, I'd think $800 seems about right. Also I really don't want to go anywhere near this water pump replacement myself.
Now if the noise is coming from the water pump, how long will it hold up? The mechanic was telling me that if this goes unfixed,
the fan could (they made it sound like will, and very soon) break free and do a lot of damage. Is this what would happen if something were to break?
They were also saying I would have no warm air with my aux water pump situation.
Now, my heater control valve went a couple days after I started hearing the noise in this thread. But I had heat and ac before that went out.
Now that the heater control valve is fixed I imagine my heat will be better than before? Or at least the same?
I know this is a lot, and it's hard to diagnose all of this at once if you can't be hands on with this.
I don't doubt that these parts are worn and need to be repaired. I am mainly concerned about how bad it actually is.
I can't afford another $800 on top of the heater control valve right now.
So my question is, how safe is this to drive on? For how long? 100s-1000s of miles, or should I not risk it?
Thank you very much!
How long a damaged water pump lasts no one can tell you with a guarantee, depends on the damage of the shaft bearing. It can seize, start to shake, and in worst case your visco fan could start shaking and damage the parts in the front of the engine like radiator, in some cases a lose/broken visco propeller wing from the visco fan even damaged the engine hood.
No warm air without aux water pump is not correct, the temperature will vary depending on the RPM of the engine, because the engine drives the main water pump by RPM. Many cars even do not have a aux water pump, some people here eliminated the aux water pump and connected the hose which usually goes into the feed of the aux water pump directly to the heater valves. The main purpose of the aux water pump is to continiously supply the same amount of hot coolant into the heater core, indepedent from the RPM of the engine.
A water pump and also the aux water pump are wear parts, they have to be replaced in certain invervals of a car life.
