About 5 years ago I sold my (family owned since new) 2000 323it sport touring e46 wagon for $800 and it def was a stupid decision. not only did I sell it too cheap I didnt know how rare it was and how much it was really worth back then.
There was another one in my town that was for sale by the original owner. $700. I went to look at it but for some reason didnt bring cash with me and decided to sleep on it until the next morning since it was so close by but by that time it had sold already.
323it's are super, super rare...people hold onto them and when they come up for sale they're gone quick. but the other versions of the e46 AWD wagons are everywhere..great wagons..
What about this one?

That looks pretty nice. But $5500 is the max I’d go based on the description. But things seem to go high on BAT.
Look on Facebook. One in NJ for $4k.

It's like herpes there is no cure but if treated properly you can live with it for the rest of your life
That BAT car has rust in the drivers door, lived and was driven in cold snowy areas and more rust will show eventually. PM sent. I bought one that another member had done a PPI on and passed on the car. Biggest unknown was brake light out- I replaced a burnt out bulb! I do need to fix one rear 1/4 window sunshade though. Or have it fixed for $30. Trying to decide if I am going to keep it or the 2002 S6 Avant from Orange County I picked up last spring.

I had a black on black with the M parallels. Hold out for what you really want!
I haven't owned an M62TU, only pre-vanos M62s. One of the first things I do is change the timing chain tensioner. I have never had a problem, and have put a lot of miles on the E38s I have owned. First one I sold had 243,00 miles and ran perfectly. The second one had 188,00 when I sold it for an X5 3 liter so I could tow my boat (the M54 is one of the very best engines ever made by BMW.)
My current 740iL has high miles too but is actually an M60. I sold my E32 with the M60 when it had 249,000 miles. The car ran perfectly and burned NO oil.
+1 for the shorter version. The iL is a long car. Better for the long road trips, but as a DD I would go with the 740i. They are nimble and fun to drive! Good luck in your search!
Or go cheap: https://www.facebook.com/marketplace...2676788104644/ This is the kind of car a little sleuthing will tell you yes or no on at the price. IMHO there is NO cheap 740i Sport worth having. Service records are a must. If you can see that all the usual suspects have been addressed then an up to date car will just need the service kept up. My car purchased with 103.5 K miles had proof of radiator, cooling system, power steering pump, full front end kit. shocks, valve cover and intake manifold etc all done at different times including transmission service. The last thing you want to do is pay top dollar for a car that was neglected at any time in it's life. The Louisville Craigslist car had proof of timing chain etc but needed a little hood work and had a history of previous hood and drivers fender replacement in the remote past, but could be a good buy anyway. I checked on this car recently https://louisville.craigslist.org/ct...012403812.html Plus he had a parts car to go with it. I was very tempted but passed. PS My son only owns black cars-I avoid them like the plague. Royal Red for me:>) Picture is from when I picked it up in Arizona with 103.5K miles from the 73 year old owner.. Doesn't even have any door dings.00808_koAenf9XsHA_1200x900.jpg

Are you open to risk to have the colors you want? https://www.facebook.com/marketplace...5739278877211/ Not that far from you.
I would find a hard core E38 E39 lover/mechanic and have them do it. I think there is one in Greenville,SC. Sure to be others who would know how to wake it up. Might be something as simple as new ignition switch that is coded correctly to key. Correct M Pars can be found easily. It would all depend on condition body/interior is in to me as to whether it is worth it. https://www.bimmerforums.com/forum/s...3sleep-mode%94

It is not black but lower mileage and a decent price if accurately described: https://atlanta.craigslist.org/atl/c...033904843.html
I've currently got my eye on a potential buy located in Avon, Indiana. Is there anybody here that lives in the Indianapolis area?
SilverIris is in Indy: https://www.bimmerforums.com/forum/s...IL-with-issues But it sounds like the one near Indy doesn't run very well even though recent timing chains and camshaft position sensors. That would be a big ?? in my mind. Lower miles but a long ways away: https://www.facebook.com/marketplace...3199098371416/

Reasonable concerns that could be de-mystified with careful observation and a few minutes in PA Soft. I've found that it's quite the lie detector when pinning down issues.
282hp, can you send me a link to the ad via PM? Never hurts to have a second pair of eyes take a preliminary look before a big roadtrip like this. Wish I had done so with my 750IL...
2001 740I M62TUB44: Iris, My daily
1997 Ford Expedition XLT 5.4L 4x4: Onyx, the 315k mile tow rig
I would sure get info on this one if I was in the market: https://treasure.craigslist.org/cto/...034523888.html

Wow, that one in Burien WA looks nice! At 99k, it is HIGHLY doubtful the timing chain guides have been done though, so that is a big expense to factor in on this purchase. Makes me long for my black/black 740i with M parallels too!
Not that far for you to check out. just have to drive all the way through the city. I know a few 356ers on your Island.
I saw a MINT red 356 convertible a few weeks ago!! Yeah I could go check out that 7.
Another Black/black one near Seattle. Missing the M Pars but a Sport none the less: https://www.facebook.com/marketplace...4477217498738/ You are living in the wrong area for a black one I guess.
https://bringatrailer.com/listing/19...-740i-sport-2/ But it did sell last January on BAT for more than twice what I paid for mine.
