    Timing chain "whistle" noise

Recently (2 weeks) Ive noticed a whistling noise that varies with rpms. I thought, at first, it was the turbo making the noise. Reading on here I suspect the timing chain/guides.
    I have a 2012 328i with78, 000 miles.
Looking in the oil fill cover there is no obvious wear on the chain, and seemed tight when I tried to move/wiggle it.
    A few questions :
How long can a slightly noisy timing chain last before self destruction?
What else might be causing the noise?

Timing chains don't make a whistling noise. It's a very pronounced whining sound. Like a power steering pump that's low on fluid. A whistle noise could be from the turbo, but I couldn't say for certain without having the car in front of me.

Oh. That's good news (I think). I'll have to do some more investigating.

It could be an air leak from the engine too.

I recommend getting a smoke test for the intake and crank case venting system.
