I've done some searching and the only thing I can come up with is a guy named Steve who used to have a website, Seattle Circuits, who had an M54 working on Megasquirt 3, but his blog hasn't been updated in nearly 8 years, and his website is gone.
I don't mind starting from scratch if I have to, but I would prefer to skip the headache if someone else has a better starting point.

I suspect the M50 plug and play maps would be a decent starting point here; you'd mostly just need to enable the double VANOS control and scale the map for your engine / injector size. Double VANOS control will require a HSD4 high side driver, or modifying the oil control valve wiring to remove the diodes so that you can use the ECU's low side drivers.
