When I bought the car it was stuck in limp mode (Trans. Failsafe Prog) as the title says it's a 1998 740i. Narrowed the issue down to the TCM, upon closer inspection there was very clear signs of corrosion and I went ahead and bought a replacement off Ebay. Unlike the current one the new unit shows up in INPA, however I'm guessing there is some sort of re-programming that needs done that I'm unsure how to go about doing. I've read that WinKFP is able to do it, however mine is in German and I'm unable to change the language (WinKFP Tool32bit - version 4.2.3).
I'm not very familiar with a lot of this and would greatly appreciate any guidance.
Some additional info:
The Replacement TCM I got doesn't have the same appearance, I haven't opened it up to look inside but the case differs slightly. It doesn't show year info in INPA so I can only guess that it was either wiped or is some sort of aftermarket production by Bosch.
The battery has been replaced and as far as I can tell the Alternator is in fine working order.
There is a draw somewhere on the battery, when not in use I disconnect it.
My current plan to try and resolve this issue is to first, reprogram my new unit. If that doesn't take I will attempt to repair my original one, lot of small chips with lots of tiny legs so I don't have high hopes there. Last I plan to try and figure out which chip holds the important memory information and swap them out.
When I switched from a normal trans and shifter to a Sport transmission and steptronic shifter I just had to swap the control module to a steptronic one, no reprogramming necessary, and I dramatically changed the function of my shifter/trans combo. A new module that works and is the correct one shouldn't need any reprogramming.
No need to program - they are a straight swap - and it should look just like this:

Upon closer investigation, I seem to grabbed a TCM that came out of a 97. It was advertised as worked for 97-98, could this be the source of my problem?
If it doesn't look like the one I showed above it's not the right thing at all!

Well if anyone needs a TCM for a 97 740i, let me know. Will be ordering the correct one and in the meantime trying to repair my current one. Thanks Timm.
The one in the picture is from a '96 - and it replaced the original '98 version that was fitted. I don't think it is a date problem (unless it came from an M60 engined E38), but just the wrong part!

Found one on Ebay that appears identical to my original one and the one you showed. Hopefully it works out proper.
