    Engine refresh

Continuation from this prior thread: https://www.bimmerforums.com/forum/s...illion-miles-)

WHY are you replacing all the hardware__is it all corroded?

It is wise to replace any locknuts and exhaust hdwr, but for the most part, the rest of it cleans up pretty good

You could do main and rod bearings, Piston rings, a valve regrind and timing chains, depending on mileage...

Three letters for you, sir. OCD.

Not replacing all the fasteners, just the ones that are visible mostly. They are rusty. Think the car spent a bit of time up north :/

Planning to buy a separate m52tu engine for a whole rebuild down the road some perhaps...that way I can take my time.

Needing some guidance on these items for now.

-Spark plugs (stock are about double the cost of NKG or Bosch aftermarket?)
-Coolant hoses (is there a set that I might buy thats an upgrade from stock?)
-Water pump / water pump housing
    -Tensioner and pulleys

Should I stay all stock on these?

bimmerbum has these NGK plugs at half the price of stock plugs: https://shop.bimmerbum.com/products/3-00253-oem-ngk-high-power-spark-plug-set-for-m52m52tum54-12-12-9-071-003

    Good move?

$195 - EMP Stewart High Performance Water Pump: https://shop.bimmerbum.com/products/3-00404-emp-stewart-high-performance-water-pump

Twice the price of stock water pump. Worth it?

M54/M52tu Aluminum Water Pump Pulley: https://shop.bimmerbum.com/products/3-00630-m54m52tu-aluminum-water-pump-pulley-11511436590

I feel like these are basic questions but its my first go at this…

Last, is it recommended that I proactively replace the electric fan (deleting the mechanical fan)? I’m pretty sure its the original fan

X2 on the Stewart water pump. One major part I didn't see on the list; Radiator! The plastic parts give up when your not expecting it, and can easily cost a head gasket, if your lucky.

I did forget the vanos rebuild, though. Are these the best I can do?

I just overhauled my cooling system and here's my list (90% of the items came from a list posted by Randy Forbes in a similar thread). I even have the prices and p/ns. This is for an S52 roadster, but our engines should be pretty similar.

Also forgot to mention that now would be a great time to check your power steering reservoir. It will be easily accessible. The reservoir, hoses and fluid are really cheap. My reservoir and one of the hoses were coated in fluid that wasn't dripping to the ground. The actual fluid was black in color. Even if you don't have leaks, I would highly recommend flushing the fluid.

If you are planning to go in that deep to replace the fuel injector o-rings, might as well consider cleaning/replacing the injector filters and testing/refreshing the injectors. Just my .02.

Yes sir, I’ll have a closer look at these and do some comparisons. Many of the parts are the same as the m52tu. Many are not.

Sometimes I get a feeling that I will purchase the wrong aftermarket part and I’ll end up redoing the work...not saving time or money

That was the motivation behind this post.

Don’t know when to go stock vs aftermarket on many of these parts.

Yes sir. I’ll look this up. It did cross my mind because I’m swapping to an m54 intake manifold so the rail needs to come over...

Do you have an injector rebuild kit you’d recommend?

I don't really have a specific recommendation for any brand or part to source from. I just got mine for the least amount from the most rated "local" eBay seller... I know, I cheaped out.

Ha, no biggie. Maybe I‘ll hold on the injectors for a bit. Feel like I’m in over my head already on this project

    They’re easy enough to access...

If anyone knows of a good set it’d be a favor.

Update: valve cover gasket, spark plugs and Vanos rebuild complete. Photos to follow.

Vcg was hard and obviously leaking. Had oil on top of all the plugs

Gents getting the attached now after the vanos refresh

    Anyone seen this one before?

Does it mean it is not functioning at all? I’m thinking it functions with oil pressure. Correct?
