Thinking of painting those old tired looking rims, but not looking forward to having to take tires off rims , or worse having to mask them off. This is what I have successfully done for many years.
Take wheels off vehicle, if not already off. Hopefully you have already sanded, wire brushed or used steel wool the entire rim. Wash the wheel well or wipe down with a solvent . Now Purchase a large can of hand cleaner, rubbery jelly types work best. Smear a liberal amount around the tire, taking care not to get any on the rim. If you get enough on the tire it will look better after clean up.
Once well covered start you spraying, A good poly type wheel paint will work well and covering the wheels several times with light coats of paint will look better overall. Let your base paint dry and if possible use a clear poly spray to top coat the rims.
Once paint is dry, allow several hours or a day is even better. wash away the hand cleaner, and you use a brush on the tires you will find that your rubber looks refreshed, and your wheels will look like new again.
Happy days are here again..
What I do is stick 3X5 notecards into the bead between the rim and the tire. Make sure you overlap them. Works like a charm and no mess to clean afterwards.
and carefully match the color of the paint you use to the color of the brake dust created by your pads. you will never have to clean your wheels again.

the best trick so far /\
No e30s again.
I use wide masking tape to mask the tires.
