After Hours Autosports E36 Pro2 Build

Well, after Josh secured 2 Formula Drift Pro2 licenses in his E36, the decision was made to start from square one on a pro2 car. You can see the build of the pro-am car here https://www.bimmerforums.com/forum/s...6-Pro-Am-build

This call was made due to some things on the red car not being pro2 legal, such as reinforcement plates welded in, some aspects of the previous cage we did not like, and Josh wanting a straight chassis.

We started with this running, driving, super clean e36 that passed emissions the day we pulled the engine.

The first order of business was to completely strip the shell.

Then out came the sound deadening

Then out came the plasma and cut off wheels!

First piece going back on, the start of the rear frame!

Most of the old car will get re used (subframe/QC, Dogbox, LS3, etc) but some changes will be made along the way (LSA anyone?)

Can/did you do weights before and after? I've always been so curious how much weight can be dropped from hacking away body panels.

Not a lot. Going to a rear mount, adding a LSA Supercharger, switching to either race gas or E85, doing a real standalone.

I did not. I am sure it ends up being heavier once the new structure is all built

    Started making the cage baseplates

Roughing in the new trans tunnel, still needs a little tuning and finishing

The rear area is mostly cleaned up. Waiting on a final decision on a fuel cell before doing much more back here.

I suppose 5x114.3 is for wheel choice? I suppose if you need to borrow wheels from people at a comp, it's much more likely.

What's the rebuild process like on the GSR? I've never rebuilt a trans. Looks cathartic to have such a large open clean space to work with.

Also, any opinion on the PBM upper arms? I don't think anyone else makes upper arms like that for E36/E46s. Is it really a necessary mod? The arms look heavier than the stock arms. I suppose you get some more camber control?

We had 5x114.3 adapters on the car all last season, and we did run in to an issue at an event with a damaged stud in the adapter/spacer that made things a huge PITA. Now we can just run a plain spacer and worst case if it gets damaged the wheels will still bolt up with no spacer.

Our coilover sponsor only makes true rears so figured why not. We were at about +.5* of camber last year with the lower arms as short as they go, so a little bit more adjustability was desired. Wisefab also makes them but the PBMs seem more stout.

The GSR is super easy to work on. The whole gearset just slides out the back and all just sorta splines together.

Do you want more stout though? I thought you wanted those parts to bend in an impact so it doesn't transfer to the subframe and jack that up. Just a theory. I'm not at the level to put it into practice.

I mean the upper arms aren't replaceable in the car anyway, so I guess you'd want an in between? Not so weak that they bend looking at them but hope they go before the subframe.
