I'm picking up a set of used Type 44 wheels (17x8 square) for my E46 330i as track-only wheels. Trying to decide on a 200TW tire I can drive to and from the track with good grip, decent life, is hard to overheat, and not overly expensive (<$175).
First question is 225/45 vs 245/40 on the 8" wide wheel. I know 245 will work, but is it worth the extra cost and will it actually be better? I'm used to playing with much wider wheel/tire sizes.
Second question is which tire? I'm mostly considering the Hankook R-S4, Bridgestone RE71R, and Falken RT615K+ (225 only)....leaning toward the R-S4 as everything I read says it significantly outlasts the RE71R. RT615K+ looks interesting based on price, but not sure if its performance is reflected in that price.
Pricing on the options I'm looking at...
RE71R: 225/45 = $145, 245/40 = $153
R-S4: 225/45 = $134, 245/40 = $153
RT615K+: 225/45 = $118, 245/40 = unavailable
Opinions?
