Going rate for z3 hardtop + options

Hello guyz, what is the going rate for used z3 hardtops in the US/Canada and what are the different makers of hardtops and what are the pluses and minuses?

I'm pretty sure there are some complete Z3s now that cost less than a hardtop with mounting hardware.

I don't think anyone makes hardtops for these cars any longer. Almost all of the ones that exist are from BMW, there are a few from a German company called Hamann.

The going rate for a hardtop seems to be $2000-$2500. You will probably need mounting hardware as well. I'm guessing about $500 for the hardware.

A hardtop is much quieter than the convertible top and it looks good. I keep the hardtop on my car about 90% of the time.

I've purchased two OEM hardtops and both we from $1,700 to $2,000 not including traveling expenses. Mounting kit is $350 to $425 depending on where you get it and where it ships from.

I bought an OEM top for $1500 2.5 years ago and have not seen another for a price that low since. Most I have seen have asking prices of >$2250 (even $4000!)--presumably, the actual sale price can be negotiated down. Mounting hardware cost me about $400 from an eBay seller in Tennessee.

Hamann and Wiesmann both made hardtops for the Z3, but they are mainly only found in Europe, and are more expensive than BMW tops.

If you buy a top, I recommend replacing the rubber bumpers that attach to the bottom of the rear, and use a good rubber lubricant on all seals. The tops are fibreglass, so they are quite lightweight (esp. compared to the top for the 450SL we used to own). My wife and I easily lift ours on/off.
    Good luck!

I paid $600 for a top circa 2011. Found a guy selling z3 with ht and I made him an offer for the top. I had it repainted to match my car at the time-helrot(~$300).
And now for the rest of the story...I sold the Z3 (98 2.8) and the new owner swapped ends on an on ramp in Tulsa area before it was re-registered in his name. The only way I discovered that event is about a year later a collection agency for the Oklahoma transportation authority tried to collect a bill for guard rail repair (I guess they traced the VIN to the last registered owner-me). They gave me the history after I set them straight on the transaction/owner change. Car was written off. But...

just for fun fun I was doing a search for a hard top a few weeks ago (thinking about one for the M roadster) and one turned up in New Jersey on a Helrot Z3 that looked someone familiar (I had installed recovered sport seats as well as a couple of telltale signs). Long story short the guy selling the top confirmed the VIN- my old car. He wanted $2000 for the hard top which looked pretty rough after going through the accident. I passed given the condition and that he was giving no consideration of my tie to the top-LOL.

I thought I found one at a good deal about a month ago. Local seller was asking $4500 for his Z3 with the hardtop. I asked him if he'd sell the top separately; he said "of course" and asked me to make him an offer. I started at $1200 (prepared to go up) with mounting hardware. He said he "asked around and someone told him the top was worth more than $3000." I said "so, will you take less than $1500 for the car without the top?" He wouldn't.

Going price is around 2K's, I don't know why so expensive. Looking for one in the 1k range. Got one a few years ago for 1.5k's but it was damaged in the delivering process, so I sent it back to seller and got a refund.

There's one in north of Asheville NC for $2k or reasonable offer: https://charlotte.craigslist.org/pts...986752387.html

I doubt $1500 would be considered reasonable, but you might be able to get it for $1800.

I think we are lucky they haven't skyrocketed yet and arent as expensive as S2000 tops... they can go for $3-4k. I miss NA Miata hardtops... those can be found as low as $500.

Phttt! Try to find one for a '58-'62 Austin-Healey two-seater (MOST Big Healeys are 4-seaters). Last couple I've seen listed were in the $10,000 - $12,000 range, WHEN THEY CAN BE FOUND!

Every once in a while, a dilapidated shell of a hdtp becomes available that NEEDS EVERYTHING (most of which is available, at least) for around $4,000__such a deal!

Those above scenarios played a factor in WHY I ordered the gray car WITH a factory hdtp ($1,900.00 option); our '99 CPO had the hdtp fitted by the first owner at the dealership after delivery (receipts totaling $2,600.00).

While you may not now think you'll use the hdtp much, history has proven them to be a good investment (think about Corvette C1/C2 hdtps...).

I will never own a convertible without a hardtop ever. I will also NEVER sell a convertible car without offering the hardtop - I don't ever want anyone to go through that struggle of finding one color matched on my account haha.

After reading this, and I don't mean to rub it in, but I would like to give another 9+ year thank you! to an old forum member DaneKane for his advice on letting us know when the dealers were unloading the rest of their hardtop inventory at discounts in 2010, a few of us took his advice:

DaneKane has not posted here forever but he was up there with what I would call 'Randy-level' know how.

strange that top prices are still up high and I see a dozen or so and none of them sell. They should be around 1500-1700 with my mounting kits at 360 so under two grand total. Best way to pick up a top is to install the mounting hardware and drive to get it. They don't fit well in suvs but will fit in pickups. Don't even consider shipping as that will cost 5-600 with a crate and still may get damaged as noted above. Also watch for fake mounts claiming to be OEM. some on ebay have a bmw part number on a sticky. BMW NEVER did that . all oem mounts are metal stamped with a part number and do not have any grinding marks on them. Mounts coming from Europe don't fit and I offer a service to align them . They will also damage your top mounting pins that at present are about 350$ each side. I have a l

ot of parts for the hardtop so if you need anything let me know. I also manufacture these pin protectors for when the top is off. They work on z3 e36 e30 and e46 I would love to hear what you think a fair price would be and if any interest. They protect the plastic bushings on the hardtop pins and your head should you happen to store your top on a roof lift. sorry I tried and tried to delete the photo of the cam accutaors . I do not know where it came from
