Wow. Beautiful work. What do you use to clean with, besides copious amounts of elbow grease?

    Thank you

There is a lot of scrubbing involved but cleaning up the aluminium parts is a very gentle two-stage blasting process. First fine crushed glass. Just enough to remove corrosion and grime without removing material. Very fine details like logos and small serial numbers are preserved. Second, size 9 glass bead to get that factory satin finish.

It gets a bit involved because I have to disassemble everything completely but it satisfies my OCD

The power steering pump is in really good condition, just needed a good cleaning. I bought a seal kit from @master6 and plated all nuts and bolts. Just have to reattach the serial number plate.

Word of caution, be sure to blow high pressure air through the inside of the intakes especially if the media used to clean them are hard enough to scratch the cylinder walls. Any bit left inside the intakes will get sucked into the cylinders and you'll be burning oil thereafter. Don't ask how I know.

Absolutely. They are flushed out and then blown with high pressure air a couple of cycles.

What to do when the train to you weekend plans is canceled... Fix the charcoal canister of course

It's had a tough life under the washer fluid container. Cleaned it up, painted, washed out the filters and filled it up with active charcoal from the zoo store. Total cost about 15 euro. Much better than the price for a new one

Got a new rubber boot on order.

That blasted cannister caused my 8er to fail the dreaded California smog test. Upon disassembly it was totally rusted through on the bottom. Great job on the refurbishment.

Does it have that much of an impact on emissions or did they fail it because of rust?

The technician had some type of handheld probe that he was moving around the canister and I guess the readings were too high around the canister (due to rust through) as opposed to the exit of that rubber boot.

At some point the AC compressor has been very ill all over the engine bay. Everything in its vicinity is covered in green grime and the compressor itself looked like a boat anchor.

Ordered a seal and gasket kit from Germany and cleaned it up.

The friction ring on the pulley is worn away and I am looking for a replacement. The coil itself works just fine. As many compressors use metal on metal friction I have been thinking of just cleaning up the friction surfaces and see how that performs.

Got a package with parts today so I could reassemble the oil pump. New seals, replaced the old and scored valve with a new one and new self-locking nuts and bolts so that the pump doesn't come loose this time

    Love the thread!

Where did you get the rebuild parts for the starter?

    I think I bought a kit from schmeidman: https://www.schmiedmann.se/sv/produk...2-41-1-289-499
The planet gear with the rubber dampers I found on a swedish site: https://www.yourex.se/Article?Artnr=9002338850

There is a detailed discussion on starter parts here: https://www.bimmerforums.com/forum/s...tarter+rebuild

Spending some quality time in the workshop and cleaned up the throttle bodies.

Vacuum hoses were brittle, cracked and clogged so they went straight in the bin

A bit of misc cleaning today. Some wheel arch covers, the heat shield under the power steering and ventilation to the alternator.

The heat shields for the exhaust manifolds were really grubby with rusty brackets and new ones are 55 Euro each. So, I drilled out where they were pressed together, stripped, plated and rivited them back together. Simple fix really

Oil pan covered in leaked oil and level sensor rusted stuck to the pan. All three studs broken and sensor's mounting holes badly corroded.

So I welded in three new studs and stripped, primed and painted the pan turned out quite acceptable. After a thorough flushing the sensor is working well again.

I don't have a way of fixing the sensor's mounting holes but with a pair of washers it will stay put

Been working on the heads the past few days. The carbon buildup isn't that bad and no real surprises except an exhaust gasket being on the wrong way

Stem seals look ok but will be replaced. Some of the lifters on the right bank are worn out so I might as well replace all of them.

Yeah the backside of your valves need cleanin'.

    New Subject:
So, to increase your lift to 11mm from 10.5mm you process a coating (low friction type) onto your rollers, thickness 0.5mm or a little over 0.020 thousanths of an inch. You'll need to take the same amount off the back of the sintered lobe of the cams. That's 180°s from lobe apex on each lobe. A machinist will understand 0.000"--> 0.020" --> 0.000" off the back.
