Greetings to all. I recently purchased a 1978 733i - the chassis & engine number is *5750007* I would like to be able to find out more - as in where it was assembled - how it came to Africa. Please can someone advise how I can go about this. Vehicle has 190kmiles on clock - is in pretty good shape - I am busy building it so I can use it on the open road.

I can only find: 733i M30 (From 01.07.1977) E23 sedan Europe Manufacture date: 06.1977 Steering: R Gearbox: M
Shogun tricks and tips for the E32 series are HERE!
Thank you Shogun. Info fits - appreciated.
Yes, European built, probably Dingolfing, Germany, where the 5, 6 and 7 seem to have been built but I don't know about the pre 80s cars.
Check out the wiki page, it's got some good basic facts in it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_7_Series_(E23)
I would appreciate a link to a comprehensive wiring diagram for the '78 733i..
Is it a right or left hand drive, it's hard to tell from pics. I saw a later model BMW e23 parts car in Harare in December. Sending you private message now.

I have all the BMW blue books for the E23, what circuits do you need?
I make E23 parts.

Thank you Hit Man & CMG - appreciate the reverts. The vehicle is a RHD with a 4 speed manual transmission. One owner car - it has been standing in a garage in Kariba for the last few years. Busy taking it down so I can get the suspension, brakes & mechanicals 100%. It did not come with an AC fitted - but I managed to pick a wreck out of Harare with a full HVAC system - & I'm busy putting the system into this car - learning quite a bit along the way. THE HVAC system looks like it will move across - I'm going to use the old style rotary dials - & Ill have to fit a button to fire up the compressor - its doable. Reference the wiring diagrams HitMan X - Thank you for your kind offer. I thought that I could get a color coded schematic of the entire wiring loom - wire sizes/color's/routing/plug numbers etc - so I could get my head around the electrical reticulation. If you could hold for a week or so - then I will be able to be more specific as to exactly what circuits I need - & Ill get back to you. CMG Ill look for your private message & revert thank you

Gents - the "Additional Air Slide Valve" - Im battling to find technical detail on this item - and exactly where the pipes running from the housing are plumbed to. Can anyone assist?
I can find info on the Aux Air Valve - but not the Additional...So - in teh picture attached - where does the pipe from "16" go?
Thank you for your assistance

Looks like its coming along nicely!
Steven greetings! Yes indeed - having a Gr8 time with this project. Suspension & Brakes all redone/replaced to best advantage, Diff/GBox/Propshaft/Mountings sorted, Engine stripped down & sorted, Interior all out & sorted, wiring - rat damage & looms disciplined, Put a HVAC system from a 84 733i into this car which has been an interesting project on its own as this one came without an AC, learnt a few things about vacuum & how the German Engineers put things together. Resprayed original - now just getting the final fitment back in place & learning all the way. Looking forward to the challenges of the L-J injection & control. I think I've got the Aux Air Valve / Additional Air Slider Valve function visual, but I am stumped on where that 10mm water hose out of the port on the housing as numbered "16"on the drawing goes - no doubt one of the members will be able to assist. My Radiator has proved to be unusable - so I will get a new Aluminium unit manufactured in Harare to fit - have to wait for the Corona Lockdown to end (hopefully) on the 19th for that - but Ja - great journey. Thanks for the interest.
Hello CBZ,
I wanted to take a picture of my 80 for you to reference, but can't figure out where that whole water box is. Looks nothing like my part coming off the left side head. Is that the tiny one under the manifold. Maybe it a non-USA spec thing.
You really are doing wonderful things to that beauty of a 733i. These are crazy AC systems in the 7ers. I would not want to install one from scratch, even if it is using "factory" parts. Awesome skills.
Stay strong during these crazy times/
Thank you Sir. Picture attached - item right of oil filter. This was taken on removal of the engine. It may be that yours has a more modern Additional Air Slide Valve - or maybe yours has the Auxiliary Air Valve being a few years on. Look forward to your revert when you get a gap. Appreciate the time.
A question please. The "TDC Position Transmitter" on the flywheel - that routes to the "Diagnostic Connector" - does this sensor have anything to do with the actual management of the engine during normal running conditions?
It looks like it is used only for diagnostics?
If this is true - where does the ECU / DME get the signal for engine speed/crankshaft position etc?
I have the TDC Posn Transmitter - I have the cable to the Diagnostic Connector Plug - but ...is there a connection from the TDC Transmitter into the loom under normal operating conditions?
Gents..the TDC Posn Transmitter is only for Diagnostics
Is it fair to say that the ECU/DME gets its info from the distributor?
your car is an L Jetronic so it doesn't have a DME. It has a jetronic analog brain box in the glove box. Jetronic takes it's signal from the distributor which on your car is a breakerless type. Hope that helps!
Max
Thank you
Yes - indeed this helps Sir!
Glad to see the car progressing. I visited last year and saw a black e23 in Harare. Good luck.

Gents...Im pretty much done - I will post pics once Im complete. At this point I am battling with fuel enrichment - checked Cold Start Injector...& the thermo time switch - all behaves properly...air slider valve - behaves s expected...checking the temp sensors into the ECU - as it looks like the fuel injection relies heavily on the engine temp...the sensor reacts when I heat it & cool it - as in the resistance changes - but Im not sure of what the resistance range should be. Any one got a table that I can use to ascertain if my main temperature sensor is in fact relaying the correct info back to the ECU?
The culprit was indeed the Coolant Temp Sensor - I downloaded the resistance ranges - tested it - proved to be intermittent. Running well - fantastic! Thanks for all yur assistance.
