I am looking to possibly sell my beautiful E39 540i. I am going to try to be as up front as possible about its condition and maintenance. The car was purchased brand new at BMW of Flemington in Flemington, New Jersey. It is Titanium Silver over Standard Gray Leather. Build is June of 2001. It has some desirable options such as the DSP Audio as well as Style 66 rims. MSRP was around $60,000 according to the reproduction window sticker I produced as the car did not come with the original (however it does have all books and manuals). The paint is in good shape with lots of shine left. There are minor dings from over the years, but nothing significant that would take away from the overall look of the car. The interior is in very good shape for the age. I spent a good amount of money to refurbish the interior with new trim pieces and I only cleaned the leather with Sonax Leather Cleaner. I also installed the full ZIZA Led lighting kit which looks awesome. The driver's seat has wear, but I have a very nice condition seat hide that can be installed. The only major thing I can think of is that the car was in a front end collision a little over 10 years ago. This resulted in a new hood being installed from a Pre-LCI E39 528i. The hood is in decent cosmetic shape with some rock chips. I would say that the body work done was done very well- all lines meet up and there are no significant gaps. The front bumper has a little wear on the front passenger side. The engine runs very smoothly, the transmission feels great. Tires are pretty new, it has new oil pan gasket and drain bolt, battery, a ton of other little things here and there. PO did a lot of work as well. Windshield is new and was replaced with original SEKURIT glass by Saint Gobain. Just passed New Jersey inspection with flying colors. Will also come with $600 worth of new parts (including a clutch which should be installed within the next 5,000 miles). I have a binder filled with receipts from my ownership as well as the previous owner's. Note that it does have a muffler delete, but I will include the muffler with the sale.
I have only ever kept the car under a car cover. It has also won an award at a car show last year.
Common E39 issues:
Pixels: The gauge cluster was replaced by BMW of North America a couple years ago. There are no failing pixels. The pixels in the radio display are failing but don't really effect the usage of the radio.
VANOS: There is VANOS clatter upon start up but it does quiet down when the engine is at operating temperature.
Timing Chain Guides: I do not know if the guides have been replaced, but due to milage and the fact that I do not hear any timing chain slap, I would think that they possibly have been. When my mechanic had the oil pan down to change the gasket, he did not mention any plastic in the oil which is usually what happens when the guides fail.
Door seals: Only the rear passenger side door seal has failed.
Cooling System: New radiator, fan clutch, expansion tank.
Other issues:
Rust: as with any older NJ car, there is some minor rust forming. There is some around the rear wheel arches, which should be fixed easily. There is some minor surface rust around the jack points. There is really none in the gas cap area which most E39s have.
Front headlight: The ballast in the driver's side headlight has an intermittent issue where it likes to flicker out.
General Module 3: The GM3 should be replaced as it will cause the windows and locks to be finicky on occasion. Recently, there have been no issues but I have had some in the past. I have replaced both the PM-FT and PM-BT modules which has lessened the problem.
Modifications:
The only modification done is a tasteful lowering done with H&R Race Springs (by PO)
