I was merging on the the highway over the weekend and the on ramp is an S curve, and I rolled up on the Vette who was poking along at about 50 mph. I was in 3rd gear just at the begining of my torque curve, just about 3500 RPM. The on ramp is about 1/8 mile long and the guy in the Vette merged so early, he almost crossed the solid white line. I stepped on it, expecting to easily overtake him along the rest of the ramp, bc I figured he was just being lazy....as soon as I am beside him, I hear the car downshift and he punches it too! At first I was pissed, then as I topped out 3rd gear at 105mph and I was nose-to-nose with him, shifting into 4th and starting to clearly piss him offf, he conceded the lane Not a true "Kill story", but I am stoked I ran door-to-door with the C5 and the best part was him letting me by...
Mods are in sig.

I’m not sure if you realise but what you did, or tried to do was a ricer fly by... and he stopped you. So you didn’t really hang with him, you got murdered by him.
Thats a quick 328is, i don't even think a stock manual M3 S52 would keep up with a C5 it takes a E46 M3 with a S54 to beat them. My 03 540iA with just a intake manifold swap trailed a C5 coupe by only 2 cars up to 100 from a dig and I was right behind him waiting on light, the 2 car gap he got on me stayed the same after 50ish. I would love to run a stock C5 vette with my current mods.

Obviously a good working condition C5 with a good driver will run away from a well driven 328is with some bolt on mods. You either out drove him or he was not racing. Given the grip of a C5, he would have to be really bad to be outdriven.
Maybe you surprised him and he had a manual trans and was in an upper gear and was too lazy to downshift. Being in the wrong gear can make a fast car slow. And there is also the possibility he was an owner of a fast car who was simply pretty confident and felt no need to race.
I got spanked hard by a C6 Z06 a few years ago. I was in my E90 M3, which has some bolt on mods. I knew I was going to lose, but was not sure by how much. I was in the right gear at the right rpm to do the best possible. The Z06 literally ran away from me. My car might do 115 mph in the quarter and the Z06 is a 125 mph car.
