Hey everyone. Have a 99 E39 528iT w/180k miles. True sport package including self leveling rear air springs. Purchased it in 2004 w/46k miles. Over the passed few years the ride has become bone jarring. Replaced the original front and rear struts a year ago. The air spring years ago and are still good. The self level module was replaced as well but is again acting up whereas its not setting the ride height accordingly. No matter if the ride is set a little low or is appropriate, the ride has become brutal and bone jarring. On smooth roads its great, but on rough patches your teeth rattle. Any ideas, similar experiences with a fix? THX!
Hey there,
Looks like you are local to me. What you are describing sounds like 1 or more frozen struts. I would be happy to meetup and take a ride if you would like. It sounds like there is certainly something up with your shocks.
Out of curiosity, have you had it in the air and spotted any possible issues?
Wade
Hey. I've had it in the air many times at my shop for other work and nothing visually indicates to the issue. The struts were replaced last fall with the recommended Bilstein Sports..
We had a similar issue many years ago and it turned out to be subframe bushings.
The harsh ride predates the strut replacement by quite a while. The springs are the self leveling air springs, which have been replaced once as the bags crack over time and leak air resulting in a sagging rear end..
