Hit up the junkyard today on a quest for seat gearboxes for my sport seats, which currently have a stripped recline box on the drivers right side.
Was pretty successful after locating a ‘94 530i
Nabbed the seatbelt adjuster cables too. I broke mine while trying to get the seats out. Kinda weird how they are installed. Anyone know where the little ‘pins’ go after you push them out? It appears like they drop into the abyss under the seat rails between that and the floorpan.
The steering wheel was out of a ‘97 740iL, and is heated. I thought I saw a thread where someone got the heat and all the steering wheel controls functional in their E34. Might be making that up. If so, it should work fine without.

Ordered a new heater core...
FYI - if you order via BMW you also apparently get the heater valve pipes:
I was expecting just the core...

I actually started to put things back in the car today.
Had the parcel shelf recovered so putting that back was first up.
The foam in the speaker grills was toast, so i ordered some speaker grille cloth off amazon and got crafty.
And the final product:
What the heck is the black triangle for?
And installed:
Much better! The old one was tatty and faded after 24 years baking away.
Also installed the heater core. Utilized the old heater valve pipes.
Fired up the car to open up the heater valves and bleed the system. Pressure checked it afterward and no leaks!
Hopefully get crackin on the drivers seat tomorrow. Its supposed to rain, so it should be a good indoor activity.

The triangle thing is to hold the centre lap belt you just pop the buckle into it stops it from laying around the seat

Nice work by the way

Yep, it's funny how something so simple is missed by so many people. When I went looking for E34s I'd also see the middle seat belt just laying on the seat bench or badly tucked into the cushion, people just had no idea how to properly store it.
Nice work on the parcel shelf, it looks brand new!
Here’s mine

Nice exterior color! I have a stock 530 steering wheel w/ intact airbag and horn ring if you need it. Great condition. I'm in Portland.

Keeps the back seat looking tidier too the buckle should have a recess for it to fit into as well

Progress is continuing slowly. Got most of the interior back together today, minus the front seats.
Diggin how clean it feels inside.
The radio was kaput, so I picked up a CD43. I haven’t yet gotten it to sit flush yet, but I’ll have to take it back out in a little bit when I get the little climate control fan (which was also kaput) comes in.
Anyone have any tips to close the remaining MM’s when I pop it back in?
Speaking of the little climate control fan, I had to pull the unit apart to replace the illumination bulb (I swear every light in this car was burned out) so i took a look at the little fan. Found the intake pipe nice n clogged.
So gross. No idea why the little fan was broken.
And finished up by giving it a wash. It had been covered by forest fire fall out, so I wanted to get the gook off, even though its still just sitting in the driveway.
Oh. The fronts seats currently look like this:
So thats the next major project. Trying to decide if i just bite the bullet and get new skins.

"New" new? E34 are plentiful enough around you that harvesting used ones seems a reasonable proposition.
Amazing thread. Great job man.
Where did you get the material to cover the back shelf? BTW, love what you have done to this car.
Thanks!
I just dropped the shelf off at a local upholsterer. I’ve tried my hand at recovering stuff previously, and know its not in my wheelhouse.
There were a few small patches that hadn’t faded, namely under the seat belt clip thing, that allowed for a pretty good match.

Forgot to mention yesterday. Also replaced all the bushings, the clip and the spring from the pedal assembly. Only one of the two bushings was still there, and even it was almost completely disintegrated.
Plus it was also gross.
Installed and cleaned up:
Also had to replace the footwell panel as one of the two legs was snapped and all dangly. Oddly, when you order a new part, only the Automatic version is available so you have to cut your own hole!
Dremel to the rescue.
Oh yeah, those throttle pedal bushings make a HUGE difference. I did them in my 525it recently and it was a night and day difference in throttle response. I can get such nice downshifts now, it's crazy.
1995 525i 5-speed - Thread
Stumbled on this thread and just wanted to say that I absolutely love it! I'm glad this car found such an awesome owner. I'm out in Bothell, but am in Seattle often. I'll keep my eyes open for this beauty
