I wondered what that little box was. Now I know. Thank you! Excellent post!

That certainly has a "gee whiz" factor to it.

Impressive fix of the AUC sensor (aka the "stink" sensor on the E39).
I found much easier and cheaper to buy a used one (for less than 10 bucks on Ebay) and replace it. Just clip it in.

Of course, but I wouldn’t want a second hand item like a sensor replacing an equally old part.

Instead of repairing the AUC sensor, can I just remove it without triggering a code?

My wires are relatively mangled up / along with the plug itself. Much easier to toss the sensor I don't care for.

Nice job man! I recently replaced my broken stink sensor with one from the bone yard. Works fine so far (knock on wood)
Edit: when I found it i had no clue what the thing was before I looked it up.

You can pull the sensor out with pliers. If the orange plastic breaks away and the metal legs are standing -- grab each one with pliers and pull out. Then simply insert the new sensor in the same orientation. Press fit.

The heating element in my old sensor was burned out.
I bought 2 new sensors and tested them before I used them.
I still get an error code, haven’t bothered to look into it any further.

Identical to what happened to me. Although the error was gone for a few days/weeks, it came back. That crap will remain broken, I don't care.
