BMW E64 Transmission Glitch

Hey everyone,
Been using these forums for a few years now to diagnose problems I’ve encountered on a few bmws over time and appreciate all the knowledge I’ve gained.
I recently bought a 2006 650i a few months ago and haven’t been able to find a thread detailing my issue, hence I’ve finally made an account on here. Since I’ve had the car, the little orange light indicating the gear position on the auto shifter itself has remained in M/S at all times. It hasn’t had any affect on daily drivability as it will still go into any gear normally and displays the correct one on the gauge cluster, but if I try to shift it into the manual mode it remains in regular drive not allowing me to shift it myself. Hoping someone else has encountered this and could provide some advice as I’ve missed being able to shift it myself.
