Use Google (or any browser) for the time being and type in what you want to find. Add "bimmerforums" at the end and you should get results.

the last couple of days, the Search Forum button isn't working. it keeps telling me :

Yes, we and the admin knows and he is trying to solve the problem. For the time being use Google search engine, add "site:bimmerforums.com" to make Google apply your search terms to just this website. Way better results.

Search is still not working and using the "site:bimmerforums.com" does no good when you what to search ONLY the E39 forums

Just curious, what keeps “breaking” the search functionality? Was there a software or server update that has caused a disconnect between tables?

It started early of July that there were server downtime issues. The forum admin put in a support ticket to get a Root Cause Analysis (RCA) of the issue or issues to see what was going on. Their Tech support tried to fix it. More things went dead, just to name a few: rules, store, advertisement, search function, etc. ... they broke a lot of stuff during the fixing of the issues. Many config files were changed.
Our admin is working on it to put it back together again step by step. But it takes time.
Actually today the server was down again for a short time: "This site can’t be reached , took too long to respond. ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT"

Looks like the admin fixed the search, also advanced search, I just tested it.
