    Vemo 88c thermostat

Hi all - I always wondered why our engine’s run so hot at 105c and upwards, what do you think about the thermostat mod that lowers it the water temp to 88c? Ecs do it for 113 dollars plus shipping to old Blighty, so it ain’t cheap, but would do it if recommended by this learned forum?

I did this mod on my 540/6. Also ran Evans NPG and my coolant system was unpressurized. Max temp I ever got was 98c in the middle of summer with the AC running. My indie mechanic even stressed tested the system and said it would hold the temps I mentioned. He was curious because he had never seen the mod before.

Ran this system for 2 years until I sold the car a couple of months back.

Not cheap! But as I’m draining the coolant soon, I’ll do it then.

It's always a good idea to get rid of the original TM thermostat!

I have been running this 88c tstat with custom programmed DME so it does not throw a 140 MAP tstat error...

Vemo 88c for the last 30k, absolutely no issues. 93c - 96c highway and hot traffic w/ac on.
No reason not to switch it out, save the beast from baking in her own juices.

Although the coolant temps are lower i think the radiator produces more heat under the hood with the 88c tstat...

Underhood temps should drop some. Lower temp and pressure will be a bit nicer to the plastic cooling system parts, but with the tradeoff of burning a little more fuel and more risk of condensation, etc. building up in the oil in cold weather (if you don't take enough longer drives).

I believe the radiator is now working harder to keep the coolant temps down thus producing more heat which engages the fan clutch more often...

Am highly tempted to run the Evans waterless coolant, particularly as our cars run quite hot, but if I did I presume the 88 degree thermostat would be redundant?

For those of you running the 88 degree t-stat....does it throw a check engine light?

Mine does not! It will store an error in the DME but no check engine on the M62TU. It may if you run it on a non TU M62. I have had my DME programmed to remove the DME error for the map sensor so I dont even get a stored DME error for the missing MAP cooling sensor...
