I have owned several BMWs from my first in high school - 318i to my current 2010 535i GT. I am looking into jumping in to a 7 series. I have done most of the moderate maintenance and repairs on all of my BMWs, most recent water pump, valve cover, thermo, air bags, fuel pump on my f10. I have heard the horrible stories with the 7 series and it appears that the 2011 740li is kind of the most reliable if that is even a word with these cars. I need a little more space so it is either 2011 740li or a 2012 X5d. Your thoughts?
Stick with a 740, and not a 750 and you'll be fine. The diesel's are pretty reliable too. BMW extended the warranty on a bunch of the failure prone emissions parts on the diesel. But the two cars are sort of apples to oranges, being a large luxo-barge versus an SUV

Yes stick with a 740 li over 750 li for durability
