    DSC/ABS Pump... Need some advice...

    Hi everyone!

Need some advice... My dad and I have a 2001 M Roadster with 19.5k miles. A couple of weeks ago I took it out what was really the first drive of the year thanks to a incredibly wet spring... A couple of miles in the ASC and ABS lights came on. I initially figured it was a bad sensor or something as is often the case. Nonetheless I made an appointment with my dealership--whom I have a VERY good relationship with.

Anyway... My dad dropped it off yesterday. Not good news. Seems the DSC (ABS?) Hydraulic pump failed and leaked hydraulic fluid on the unit and fried it--at least according to my dad who talked to the service manager. Part number is 34512229827

The dealership quoted us $3,800 for the PART. So we are looking at north of $4k for the job--even with the discount we normally get. I typically don't get used parts as I always feel if the one in my car failed why wouldn't a used replacement? But $3,800 is nutso.

Anyone have any ideas? Is used the way to go? Also, it looks like it is interchangeable with the E46 M3; hopefully that is the case.

    Thanks!

For your model, it is interchangeable with E46 M3. So you could get a used one, and then code it (programming) to your car. It has to be programmed, but that isn't hard.

Is this something our dealership (or an indy shop) could do? Or would we have to go about it some other way?

Dealership may or may not program used parts. But a knowledgeable indy can, or even do it yourself if you're good with computers. The tools needed are all here in the Z3 subforum.

In Europe it's very cheap they sell for less than $1,000.
I am sure including shipping will be way cheaper.
Let me know if you like to get one.

The units are sealed I’m surprised it could be fried by a “leak”. They get wet all the time when driving and don’t fry. Able does he have the module that cracks the solder pads causing the false abs pump fail code. If so then it’s about a 175$ fix by module master.

Here's DIY on sending the pump to Module Master for a $198 repair:

These pumps are different than the "usual" Z3 pumps, it's not an ASC. Module Masters may have a fix, you'd have to check.

There are plenty in eBay for $175-299, or visit your local junk yard.

It MUST be from the early E46 M3 or Z3M with S54.

Nope, DSC3-ES as in the M3 and Z3M (S54) is not repairable. https://modulemaster.com/rebuilds/sh...s/ate-m20-bmw/

That's what he told my dad... I can't imagine he would be trying to screw us as we know the Service manager really well...

At this point I think we are going to roll the dice and get a used unit. As little as the car gets driven I can't imagine it would be a problem again.

Can anyone recommend a BMW recycler?

Here's one, but this is apparently not the right pump for an M.

This place has a few different ones.

    Here's one for "Assembly, 3.0L, w/o dynamic stability control ", i.e. non-ASC?

I think that's a different part number. My understanding is it has to come from an s54 car?

    Car-part.com searches all junk yards.

Ebay is good too. You'll have a great selection if you search for BMW e46 M3 abs pump.
Choose one that is from a more reputable seller.

Not right. It has to be from an S54 M3 or Z3M with S54.

Thanks! I'll start looking. Wish I had the time to just put it in myself...

It only takes about 5-10 minutes to pull out the module. Disconnect harness and a few torx (I believe) screws and it’s out. Good luck. I don’t know if that will save you anything since your having the dealer/Indy code it

Bavarian auto parts is a good source (I got a module from them them last year). Pretty quick ship and 1 yr warranty.

I note your location. Import Specialists on E Pythian can install or Alternative Beemer Service in Rogers (AR) is another alternative to dealer (I doubt dealer will install used part). Both have done work for me in past.

(and I will add the local dealer is not what it was in years past-too many changes in last few years)

    There are two options:
    1. Use the company on ebay (I'd have to look it up) where you send your unit in for diagnosis and repair and it's about $80-$100 if they can fix it. When I used this service, they called and said it was not fixable and i could buy a reman one for like $200 or $400.
    2. buy a used one. I was lucky and there is a guy who parts out m5's local to me and I got a unit for $85 shipped. I used my laptop with INPA and whatever the app is that you need to align the ABS unit with your car to do the replacement myself.

I would not pay anyone to do this job or pay north of $200 all in to fix it yourself.
