Did an oil change over the weekend. Have done many since I've owned the car. Oil filter started to go on but became tough to screw on. Took it off and tried a few times thinking it might be cross threading, but turned out the threads on the oil filter were bad. I was hand tightening only, of course.
Bought a different brand of oil filter. Before putting it on I checked the oil filter housing for damage. While it is called the housing, this is the usual unit that is bolted to the side of the engine block, below the exhaust manifold and above the power steering rack. Open bottom of the oil filter faces forward when installed. The threads on stud or stem, which the oil filter spins onto, were slightly damaged at the end. I was able to use a small pattern file and a lot of patience to remove the damage an allow the new filter to spin on easily.
I just wanted to know if that threaded stem or stud can be replaced as a separate item or if the whole housing must be replaced. I know on some Fords the center bore is hex shaped and you can unscrew the stem with an allen wrench. Did not look like the center of this is hex shaped.

If you have it working fine - then I personally wouldn't worry about it.

I have never even looked if they come out, mostly they are just swapped as a unit, that I have ever done

Thanks for the photo. That is the one I have. My plan was to just continue using it. Just wanted to know if it was just an easy replacement of the stud, should it ever come to that.

I know its easy to just replace the assembly. or, if you get in trouble, you can unhook the oil cooler lines and take the assembly off and thread your filter into the block because the m20b27 eta engine doesn't have that assembly on it and lots of people add it when they do the 2.5 head swap on their cars.

You cannot screw the filter directly into the block if you remove the housing (without an adapter). It was the same on my 85 325e.. There is a hollow bolt that attaches the oil filter housing to the block.
I 've heard of screwing the oil filter directly into the block or maybe seen a pic - but honestly never seen it in real life and not sure what model they did that on (if there was an adapter or what) or what model came without a cooler.
To do this an adapter would have to be acquired that would screw into the block that allows for filter.
one of the m20s doesn't have that adapter. I cannot remember which one but I thought it was the etas. maybe I am misremembering though since your 85 had it. I thought on one, the oil filter went on parallel to the block and one it went on perpendicular.

I'm not sure what vehicle this came from - I'm thinking it was an "e" ... I'll try to investigate why some had coolers and others did not.. was it an option? was it by region? Not sure..

I think that having the oil cooler is a good idea, so if the threads on the housing ever get messed up beyond repair, I will just replace it.

And yes, the oil cooler is nice to have but if something happens, ita not a show stopper to unhook it and use the eta set up till you get repairs
