Automatic Transmission Hard To Shift To 2nd Gear

    hi guys,

    2000 E39 automatic. 129K miles.

    Symptom:

when starting and the first couple of miles, transmission drags and hard to shift to 2nd gear, loud and slow, 2nd to other higher gears shifting no problem.

usually after a couple of miles, starts and goes smoothly.

don't think it is temperature related. if parked for a while after driving, engine is still hot, sometimes symptom still occurs.

recently changed transmission fluid and filter. no improvement.

    please help!

Could you check your battery's voltage when the problem occurs ? Is it fully charged ?? How old is it ???

What is a "full 12 volts?" That's useless information.

Open the trunk and wait for the trunk light to go out. Measure the battery voltage.

Start the car. Measure the voltage, at the battery, again.

List both voltages to one decimal point.

12 volts, is pretty low for a battery. It should be over 12.5 volts...

Recharge your battery to full, and check test your alternator as well. That is often the problem that causes the transmission gremlins you are experiencing on the E39.
