Anybody??
Sounds like a start with some chain slap (tensioner go bad?) and then wind from the fan.
While not desirable, not necessarily alarming to me ...

Video isn't the greatest, but sounds like top end noise until oil pressure builds up.... The M62 uses 2 anti-drainback valves to keep oil from daining out of the valvetrain and VANOS. Just to note, the timing chain tensioner also uses spring pressure to keep tension on the timing chains on startup, then oil pressure takes over. Check to see if your noise is coming from the front near the timing covers, or if it is coming from the top end.
I have had the same noise on startup since buying the car at 107k miles. I'm at 109k and recently changed the tensioner last month but the sound persists. I'm guessing it's as ulintze29 suggests about oil pressure.
The chain guides, tensioner, and anti-drainback valves have all been replaced and the noise is still there. At times it's real loud and at times nothing at all, I'm confused and a bit scared something is coming apart. VANOS?? I hate to take it all apart again but if a VANOS rebuild will stop this dreaded rattle I'm all in! What do you all think?
Would bad guides case this noise? The guides were replaced by the previous owner so I suppose there is always the possibility he lied to me.
There is nothing in this video what sounds too bad, but it's always hard to record noise properly. This helped me a lot for locating noises: https://www.amazon.com/Lisle-52750-S...s%2C114&sr=8-3
I have one of those but the problem is the noise only last 1-2 seconds on startup. it's hit or miss on when it happens and to what severity. Doesn't matter hot or cold engine. All I know is my OCD is getting the best of me!
It's the vanos rattle on start up you hear. My 540i M62TU also has this rattle sometimes for 1-2 seconds on start up. The vanos is sometimes noisy and sometimes quiet when idling. I have replaced the check valves in there with no change (waste of money). The vanos likely needs a rebuild, but I'm probably not going to worry about it until I have to pull the valve covers or timing covers, or need to do guides.

I did the anti-drainback valves and tensioner myself so I know they are new. The PO said he has the guides done so I hope so. If it's the VANOS making this noise and the diesel sound at hot idle then a VANOS rebuild is going to be done soon as it drives me nuts.
No check engine light?
