After getting reacquainted with this code, I have cleaned both MAP sensors, removed and cleaned the intercooler [very oily], and ensured that the oil filler cap is well sealed. A Google search revealed this simple suggestion from a 'CCA member:
Couple things can cause this one, the start of the death of a high pressure fuel pump. Try this first unplug the tank vent valve and let the vehicle idle for 15 mins and plug it back and clear the faults. This will reset the DME adaptations and if the fault stays away its fixed. If it returns the high pressure fuel pump might be the issue and need to be looked into.
Can idling for 15 minutes with the tank vent valve disconnected cause any harm? I assume that the potential upside is that this protocol will give the computer a new baseline from which to quantify the relationship between throttle position and boost pressure.

Fortunately, this turned out to be a false alarm: when removing covers to scope out the fuel tank vent, I discovered that the CCV hose had popped out of the intake tube just downstream of the MAF. Popped it back in [tightly this time!] - no more CEL.

Often you'll get a much better code and description if you use BMW oriented scanner that reads BMW codes. There can be many BMW specific codes assigned to one vague P code.
