428i Chassis Stabilization, and ABS lights every so often

    Evening!
Ive had my 2016 428i gran coupe (X-Drive) for a bit, and just crossed over 47,000mi.
Every so often, when driving a little spirited, ill get a Chassis Stabilization, and ABS message one after another. No difference in sounds, or driving was noticed before. I hooked a code reader up, and get the code 48097d "Transfer box: Fault, Clutch position known, no four wheel drive" code D36D44 "Signal invalid, transmitter VTG" And 480682 "Transfer Box: Fault, Clutch position unknown"

Now, I really dont notice any difference in the vehicle at all since this has happened (3 times so far) but those codes together, must have a common cause, as there are three. Just looking for a little insight as to where I should start. I am guessing transfer case has an issue, but thats just me throwing a dart at something.

    Thanks in advance!

You will have to change your VTG (transfer case actuator module) soon. It briefly lost connection with it, so it threw the faults.
It's not the transfer case itself.

If you have warranty, get it taken care of. If not, used module and correct programming can work. It's a mildly complex process with lots of little details.

So, I had someone get a used module, and has the ista+ software. First did a system update, which was successful. But now the issue were having is the unit will not comission properly. This came out of a working 428i same year, same transfer case (gearbox class) but had engine troubles and is waiting parts and owner to have funds to do it. We have tried to go through the proceedure to replace control unit and do calibration. The software lets the replace unit complete, but when going to do the calibration it says no valid calibration values stored, please go to replace control unit. We put the unit back into the car it came from and it setup fine, with the same software level etc. Is there anything im missing in this process? The details on how to do it are very scarce online, but it seems to be straight forward (and the same process works on the other car!!).

Do you have the 4 digit calibration code off your transfer case? Take a pic of it. The code needs to be physically typed into the module, and then run the whole calibration procedure.

Make sure it has been flashed, coded, and flexray sync to the car it is intended for before trying the above.

Often you can lose coding if you put into another car.

Yes we did that, and it actually all the sudden cleared itself and self calibrated after a bunch of tries. I finally got into a BMW dealership, and they said the front and rear differential were shot and they replaced both, as my buddy works for a dealership and they trusted the work he did before. said the differentials caused the codes on the transfer case , does this seem logical?

Just an update! Finally got the car back, as I expected them changing the differentials did not help, but I guess it’s part of bmw’s troubleshooting guide, lol. So they then changed the transfer case + vtc actuator wholesale.

just wanted to give an update! Yay warranty!

    cheers.
