That is a great price. I just bought enough for my next two oil changes. The Amazon driver is going to think I bought an anvil given how heavy that box will be with three 5 qt bottles in there........

I ordered the Mobile one gallon, plus extra quarts, and two ATF, and a new drain pan. It came in a coffin sized box and was fairly heavy. The biggest complaint I have gotten was a roll cage for a Jeep. Funny you say Jeep I actually have some tech write ups and product reviews on Lone Star. It amazes me this site has so much traffic and all of my Jeep sites are dying.

Never had a Jeep, but we love our Z3. We rented a Renegade last summer and did not miss anything about it after turning it back in, which was surprising since we both liked the look.

Anyone have experience with the newer Castrol Edge 5W-40 European Formula? I used Mobil1 0W-40 and like it, but wondered if the Castrol Edge 5W-40 EF is better somehow. M1 is not BMW approved, but it is OK for an M54 overall. The Castrol Edge is BMW approved. Will this make any sort of difference?

I used to use the dealer supplied Castrol 5W-40, but did not like the brown residue it left on the oil cap. It was nothing terrible, but it seemed sort of rusty/burnt. I switched to Mobil1 back in about 2006 and have not looked back. No more rusty looking smooge on the cap. However, maybe this newer Edge UF stuff is decent. It’s priced about the same as M1, so it’s not about money. If it is better, I’ll use it. Any opinions/reviews of Edge European Formula 5W-40? I went to a Castrol site and they recommended Edge 0W-30 Titanium for the M54. Uh... I think this may make my Vanos rattle.

O'reilly's has a 5w40 synthetic european formula house brand that meets the BMW LL-01 spec. Super cheap. If you are changing regularly, don't sweat it. I run 5w40 in all my I6 cars. Used to pay for LiquiMolly, which I love, but realized it wasn't necessary given the frequency of my oil changes.

Bringing back an oldie.

The PO of my recently aquired 98 Z3 2.8 (76K miles currentlY) has all records showing the shop he went to always put in 5w-30 synthetic blend. THe prev PO only drove about 1500-2000 miles per year, summer time and no major trips. He lived in Mid state IOWA. I live in same climate maybe slightly less extreme. I live in Northwest Indiana.

I plan to drive it much more, but not in the extreme colds. Maybe lets say 30degrees or higher.

I picked up 5w-30 Valvolines High Mileage oil.

Will there be any harm in this product or should I change up now that I am going to be driving it more?

You can use the 1990's 15W/40 oil *only* if you go whole hog; dress for the 1990s, carry a 1990's vintage flip phone, and sing Boyz II Men "tunes" all day long. Otherwise use a quality modern 0W/40 synthetic and change it at 10K intervals.

Don't overthink it. 0W40 or 5W40 synthetic Mobil 1 or Castrol. You can't go wrong with these and they are readily avail at good prices if you buy the 5 qt containers.

This is what I've been using. It's readily available at my local Canadian Tire store and sometimes goes on deep discount.

I did go to O'Reilly's to get Valvoline SynPower Full Synthetic Motor Oil 5W-40 1 Quart - SYNPOWER5-40 but they did not have it.

So, I ended up going exact for this oil change as to what the prev owner was doing as they had 5w-30 synthetic Blend. So I bought that and will take bake the 5w-30 full synthetic from Walmart.

I figured it cant hurt going the same choice as prev owner for this round.

I will plan for the next change to do something diff. So I went with 5w-30 Synthetic Blend (Valvoline).

BMW Oil Specifications

BMW Longlife-98 (BMW LL-98)
Special long-life engine oil, approved by BMW. Also meets ACEA A3/B3, API SJ/CD, EC SAE 5W-40. Usually required for BMWs manufactured before MY 2002. Obsolete since 2009.

BMW Longlife-01 (BMW LL-01)
Special BMW approval for fully synthetic long-life oil. Product meets ACEA A3/B3 and API: SJ/CD EC-II. Usually required for BMWs built after MY 2002. Can also be used where a BMW Longlife-98 oil is recommended.

BMW Longlife-01 FE (BMW LL-01 FE)
Fully synthetic long-life oil with fuel economy properties. Oils meeting this specifications must have a low HTHS viscosity to meet the manufacturer's fuel economy requirements. These oils are only suitable for the following engines: N1x, N2x, N54, N55, N63, N74.

BMW Longlife-04 (BMW LL-04)
Special BMW approval for fully synthetic long-life oil. Viscosities are SAE 0W-30, 0W-40, 5W-30 and 5W-40. Usually required for BMWs equipped with a diesel particulate filter (DPF). Can also be used where a BMW Longlife-98 or BMW Longlife-01 oil is recommended.

BMW Longlife-12 (BMW LL-12)
Special motor oil for certain approved gasoline engines and the following diesel engines only: Nx7K1, Nx7U1, Nx7O1 from model year 2013. Not suitable for engines with 2 or 3 turbos.
BMW Longlife-14+ (BMW LL-14+)
Special motor oil for the following gasoline engines only: N20, Bx8 from model year 2014. Not allowed for diesel engines.

BMW Longlife-17 FE (BMW LL-17 FE)
This specification requires a low SAPS, usually ACEA C5 compliant, 0W20 oil. Oils meeting this specification are usually recommended for the newest gasoline and diesel-powered BMWs. The base oil is typically from Group IV (polyalphaolefines

I will consider adding it but the majority of threads in the engine oil section already say to use LL-01 approved oil.

The Special Oils in the manual referred to synthetic BMW 5W-30 at the time. In 2008 they changed the Special oils to BMW High Performance Synthetic Engine Oil (5W-30). It eliminates the

I know Walmart may have "fits" for vehicles wrong and cant keep up, but it says it Does NOT fit. But I feel like it will based on mentions of using Mobil 1 Here...

The short answer is yes, that is good oil for your M52

Look for BMW LL01 cert. Mobil 1 0W40 is back to being certified so the 5W40 probably is too. Castrol Edge 5W40 is also certified or was the last time I checked.
