Last night I was checking up on a thread on mye28 from Roy about an Alpina e23 he is restoring and I saw an issue he was having with his windshield gasket. To begin rear ones are NLA but the fronts are available at the low low price of $250.00, sarcasm intended. Anyway, in his post he alluded to it being the wrong size and swapped it out for another, which was also the wrong size, too big. I bought a front gasket in September last year and just went to use it last month and the installers told me it was too big. I thought they were just incompetent but as it turns out they were right, it is too big.
I bought the gasket from BMW through getbmwparts.com. Never once thought that the gasket made in the same size from the first e23 to the last might be manufactured too big. Not sure if they'll still exchange it or do anything yet but I will keep you posted. So the heads up is, apparently there is a batch out there that has been produced oversized so if you order one, check the sizing as soon as you get it.
If it is too big why exchange.
it is a bmw part, it has a 2 year warranty, should exchange just fine if you do it properly.
Just an update to this. I was able to get the new gasket that was "too big" and put it next to a used one that I got. They were the exact same size. The installers just weren't up to speed with installing windshields with gaskets like this I guess. So the saga continues to get my glass installed properly.

Look for a body shop that deals with classic cars. Old American cars used gasketed windshields like these too. I was worried from the sounds of your struggle that the installers were the problem. At least they didn't break your windshield in their failed attempts to install it.

I had to deal with the same thing taking my car back for a leak after they replaced my windshield.
