Hi all,
For last 10 years had the joy of owning a 1995 E36 328i coupe auto in Boston Green and done lot of kms on it - buying at 170,000km and now hitting 320,000km. I've recently decided to retire her and get a 2011 135i DCT, which is incredible. Anyway before the purchase, she started running rough, particularly with hesitation from take-off and sometimes just stalling. Never missed a bit before this.
To run through what I've done
- It had a new camshaft position sensor installed when I got it in 2009 (my first project)
- M50 intake. Recently inspected all vacuum hoses and appear intact. Cleaned throttle body and ICV
- New fuel pump, battery, PCV and alternator in last two years
- No 2 spark plug had oil in the socket and all spark plugs were old - with signs of some oil burning or rich mixture. All replaced. Checked voltages and resistance on all coil packs - all working fine. Had no change in running with new plugs
- Checked the DME housing - no signs of water intrusion or obvious rust. No obvious damage to harness.
With my new car, the previous owner gave me his Foxwell code reader. Checking on mine after clearing had following errors occur after a short drive:
- 37 DME Main Relay: Delay (doesn't clear)
- 53 Idle Speed Actuator (clears sometimes but quickly reappears and is associated with rougher running/hesitation)
- On transmission module - 98 CAN Engine Intervention (check engine light, probably triggered limp home mode when DME had error - I cleared and didn't reoccur til later drive)
- On ZKE module - 17 Pin contact drivers door open circuit. (doesn't clear)
From my reading around here and other forums it could be following:
- Idle Control Valve has failed (electrical issue, explaining intermittent nature)
- DME or fuel pump relay could be faulty (triggering code 37)
- Issue with DME itself
- No idea with error 17!!
I'm going to replace ICV with a spare from a wreck and try same with relays. Any further ideas as to what it could be?
The last code is probably the door switch that is located inside the b-pillar. Be sure to read some guides on how to do this otherwise you will be in more trouble.

No worries Eric I suspected something like this. Funnily enough, window drops down fine and interior lights come on when they should, so not a priority to fix this. More so the engine codes.
