I have a stubborn p0021 code (cps. timing advanced bank 2) wont go away. recently bought this beautiful 2002 x5 4.4 m62tu (3 weeks ago. no maintinace records) I'm willin to change the timing chain guide rails if need be but... No debris in pan or filter housing. No engine noise (possibly faint diesel sound from upper engine) Runs perfect at all rmps' swapped 1 and 2 cps already. Same code. Im lost any ideas? Thanks in advance!

Do you have a way to get the BMW code using INPA or other toolset? With INPA you can do some VANOS activations and get more specific codes. Ive never had the M62 engine (I do have the close cousin, S62) but sounds VANOS related to me. Only a guess though. INPA can be downloaded and the K/D-CAN cable is under $20. Some cables even come with a copy of INPA. If you can get other BMW software that will work also.
Well thats the kind of info I'm looking for. I will figure out what INPA means and if I can get the BMW code. Thanks for the response. Funny thing. I reset the codes with my schwaben everyday it seems. Always after the second start up service soon comes on codes appear. Today was different it let me drive half the day long with no code. Cautiously optimistic
Not sure which Schwaben tool you have, but I also have the Foxwell NT520 which is similar to what Schaben uses. You can also do some activations with it. So might want to check your scanner and see what options it has.
Any update with the issue?
This thread in the e39 section might help you too.

It's timing chains rails, that is the exact code for it.
