I have a relatively new diamond key (bought at a BMW dealer a couple of years ago). It works most of the time to remotely unlock the doors, and always works if I put the key in the door lock (either drivers door or trunk lid).
The issue s:
Doesn't work remotely sometimes.
Remote range sucks -5 - 10 feet max.
Sometimes the Windows open about 1 or 2 inches on unlock.
I figure:
1. The fuses are OK, or the door locks wouldn't work at all.
2. I assume the key is OK, it's only a couple of years old.
I would think the Gm3 module or the antenna booster module would be the culprit, but don't know how to diagnose.
Any pointers?
TIA!
The windows will open if you keep the button pressed.
Does the other master key work the same way? If this is the only key, difficult to troubleshoot.
How often and how long do you drive the car? Perhaps the key is not fully charged. Urban legend suggests that an electric toothbrush stand will charge it.
Some locksmiths have an instrument to detect the transmit signal from the key. Don't know if the instrument can actually measure the signal strength.
You may wish to remove the left C-pillar cover and examine/clean the signal connectors on the key receiver.
