Will a 2000 323ci engine
Work in a 2005 325i?
The 2000 323i came with an M52; the 2005 came with the M54. It can probably be done but you'll likely need other electronic parts. Probably best to find the same engine. I could also be very wrong.
What he wrote! The engines are very similar mechanically speaking but the electronics are very different.
The engine itself is almost identical. Use your intake manifold and swap over your old coolant temp sensor just in case it is different. The crank sensor is supposed to be different but I have not seen one that didn't plug right in yet.
The only issue I had installing an M52TU into an M54 car was that the spark plug tubes are a smaller diameter in the M52TU head. The pencil type coils used on the M54 are larger in diameter and although they fit right in you may find a DTC for ignition activation if the coil body is contacting the cylinder head.
You can solve that issue with a set of rubber coated coils from a later e60/e90 if necessary.
