Hello,
Hello Bimmerworld. I needed some advise I am seeing oil build up (leak) looks like valve cover or just the gasket not too sure. I am planning to do this myself I have done valve cover gasket on previous MB E320 both inline and V6 so I am comfortable, however, this is the first time on BMW. (1) Should I do only the gasket or just go ahead and get a new valve cover too? (2) Do I need the RTV gasket maker along with the gasket? (3) Does anyone know where I can find a DIY for this with pictures? (4) Should I replace the spark plugs while I am doing this?
Attached are some pictures before and after wash for reference. I didn't get it in the picture but oil is settling on the engine mount on the bottom.
Thank You.

That's a lot of oil, hope fully nothing else is leaking, if the valve cover has a build in pcv valve in it you might consider replacing the cover also, do spark plugs while it's a part if needed, I use factory gaskets
That is a lot of oil. Unless you have an extra $430 to spend, i would take the valve cover off and inspect it for cracks before I bought another one. Definitely do the spark plugs while you're there. I think Pelican has a DIY or I could post some photos from the Bentley manual if needed. Check FCP Euro for OE parts.
I has this same issue. Make sure the valve cover is replaced alongside the gasket - they tend to warp with age and ten years is about the lifespan of the plastic part.
Is there any other sources of an oil leak on that side of the engine besides the cover gasket? I'm seeing oil drops underneath in the very back corner on parts underneath that area..it's too hard to pinpoint because of access but just wondering. I did not replace cover itself, just gasket
