Hello,
I recently purchased a 2004 BMW 525D while in Europe. The car has around 200,000 miles on it. I noticed sometimes when shifting into first gear that if I do not give it a lot of gas, occasionally the car goes into an engine fault low power mode. It also does this going from first to second gear as well. Sometimes I have the rpm up to 3k to prevent this from happening. Occasionally it happens in reverse as well. Then it has its days where it doesn’t go into engine fault at all. Once it goes into engine fault mode, I turn off the car and the mode is gone. Just finished driving a 600 mile round trip and car seems fine. All the filters and fluids have been changed and flushed. I’ve read it could possibly be a problem with the battery or even needs a software update. Tomorrow I’m going to check the codes when it goes into engine fault mode. Open to any and all suggestions! Thank you in advance.

Hi.
For start, do you have an automatic gearbox?
What check engine light does come on? A classical, small one in the instrument cluster, or the big 'half yellow' engine light on the central instrument display?
For anything more specific, you really need to read the codes. I would suggest buying some kind of a scan tool. There are many cheap ones that will do the job.
With 15 years old BMW, you will need it frequntly .
Hello,
It’s a manual one. And it’s the big half engine light. But each time it happens I just restart the car it goes away. I’ll try and check the code today and get back to you! Thanks!

Hey,
I tried changing the fuses and seeing if that helps with anything. Thinking it might be a fuel pump issue. Have to wait a few days for a mechanic to check. Europe stinks lol
Did you ever get those codes?
