I'm having a heck of a time trying to change the VIN coding on a used SZL (Steering Angle Sensor) module I picked up for a 04 e66...
I got closest with Tool32 and can read the current vin, but when I try to program it with the full VIN (all 17 characters) with the correct digit at the end, it isn't happy and doesn't take the change..
It's out of an 04 745 and going into an 04 760...
Is there a preferred tool for this operation? I even took it to a dealer with Autologic and they get some sort of message saying it's the wrong part #...
Has some writing on the unit...

Need more info on the cars.
There was a change in steering angle sensors on production date 03/2004 for e65.

The 04 car it's going into has a 10/03 build date, I'm almost certain... not sure I have the other one. Any idea how to dig into it deeper without knowing the exact car it came out of? The 'new used part' has part no 61319138467 which should fit 760 04-06, 760Li 04-08...which my car does fall into...but that's just according to a couple parts reference sites...not sure of the exactness of that detail (or how they determined that compatibility)

61319138467 is from models built after 03/2004, so it is the wrong part number for your 10/2003.

Thanks for that detail! Do you happen to have the part number for the earlier (10/03) cars? Think there’s any hope in getting this one to work or reprogrammed in some way? Seems really odd that this wouldn’t be somehow a superseded part and have a way to interchange... it looks identical but obviously something internal is different...

BMW parts system, online:

Works best with the last 7 of VIN in the "Serial" blank and click search.

It doesn't seem real obvious that it's not supposed to work, though...I see what you mean about there being multiple parts, but both parts mention they were used in the 7 series e66...does it typically list crossover parts for the entire series, or perhaps is there a TSB explaining this changeover? It's technically in the middle of a 2004 build year? And since I can't find the exact part number ON the part, i'm just trying to make sure I'm not giving up too soon

Don't go by those dates. Go by the dates on the page with the picture. It's clear that they say the transition is at 03/2004.
