Hello, alt failed got new 1, that didn't come with pulley. Try to take off pulley on old one, got 24mm bolt off but can not take the pulley or fan off. Please help
See Figure 3 and the accompanying text: https://www.pelicanparts.com/bmw/tec...Alternator.htm
here is a parts view, if the bolt is off, probably #25 is binding https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/sho...diagId=12_0526
There is a repair kit aka mounting kit available. example, double check in realoem with your VIN https://www.turnermotorsport.com/p-7...uine-bmw-part/

A bit unrelated: what does #2 "Fan wheel" do?
Looks like a fan wheel to cool the alternator, fresh air comes thru small opening in the bumper https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/sho...diagId=51_0591
connected to these parts https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/sho...diagId=12_0162

I had seen the duct that goes to the alternator but I didn't know it was actively cooled with a fan. Neat.
Dope, thanks fellas. I'll check it out tomorw after work.
This video may be useful. It's from an E30 3 series, but it also has a toothed rack and pulley.
Here you can see the airflow nicely, the older version like on the M30 and M70 pulls their air out, that fan pulls the cool air coming from the duct thru the alternator, that is in German called Topfgenerator = einflutige Durchlueftung = pic on left, scroll down where the airflow is shown.
The compact version like on the M60 and on my E36 M3 is shown on the right, Compact Generator, zweiflutige Durchlueftung.
The compact generator is cooled by two internal fans because of the higher specific power - which also means more heat. The two air streams enter axially through openings in the drive and slip ring bearing plate and out radially through openings on the circumference of the housing.

put it in the freezer for a few hours... or dab some pb blaster between the pullley and shaft.
Regarding the air cooling, yes these engines are well designed , as most US manufacturers are taking air from the rear of the Alt which is close to the exhaust manifold... not too smart to chill electronics with hot air
In fact after some body work or brake work the people are the shop are more likely to forget to reinstall the duct from bumper to the manifold at the rear of the Alt, time to check your set up
