I'm bringing one back to life after fifteen years. I installed a new fuel pump/filter, old one froze. I've got it starting consistently but it only runs for a second or two. It will start twice then you have to let it rest for a few minutes and it will start twice again. Has anyone else had a similar problem? Thanks for the help!
Welcome to the Forum!
You have a rare bird there as in 86' only the 325e was sold in the U.S. for the 3-series, as they discontinued the 318i until 1990.
So what other work have you done already?
I am hoping that you drained the tank and got all of the varnish out when you replaced the fuel pump and filter.
Next would be to have a look at the ignition system, pull off the cap and inspect it, and the rotor button. Also have a look at the wires, ensure they are not cracked, split, ect.
Then have a look at the intake system, make sure the MAF moves freely, and the idle stabilizer valve, and throttle body is clean. Have a look at the intake boot, and the hoses attached to it, should be free of cracks, splits, ect.
Lastly before you get too far into this car, get that timing belt replaced, it is way past due. On a side note, it may have skipped timing already, and that is why it isn't running.

Fuel system cleaned, good spark, in time because it runs great for a short spell. I'm trying to figure out what the piece in the picture with no cover on it does. It appears to be some kind of vacuum diaphragm. Hoses all appear good. Replaced slave cylinder, it was froze up. It's a really nice clean car!

I would have to pull out the book for that one, as it does work with the vacuum system on the car, just cannot remember what.
Put the timing belt at the top of your list, for if it strips out, the motor will be kaput.
Also it isn't a bad idea to just do the waterpump at the same time, for it is right there.

I owned an ‘85 325e for 15 years. That is an altitude sensor, if memory serves me.
Yes, the belt and the tensioner pulley need to be replaced ASAP. As Darin has written, your engine is toast if that belt breaks. Replace it (there’s a kit with all the parts), the water pump, the thermostat and the belts.
Can you tell me easily where the sensor is? I'm at work right now and can't look it up. Thanks!
