I removed the steering wheel on my '94 530i and cannot get the damn thing back on! It should seat solidly and the locking mechanism should engage. It's just not sliding on the last 1/8" or so. I have the locking pin aligned with the contact reel just as Bentley says. Also, the key's inserted in the ignition and turned to position 1 (just like when removing it). This style wheel is fastened to the column with the bolt rather than self-locking nut. I've done with numerous times with my '89 and '90 535i's and never had a problem.
What am I missing here?
Thanks.
Got it! Turns out the 1/8" gap is normal. Removed the shroud around the steering column and look underneath and discovered it's fully mated. Sorry for the false alarm. 60nm on the mounting bolt and it's ready to go.
Thanks all.
One follow-up question.
I thought the key must be inserted and rotated to position 1 before the steering wheel can be removed. This is not longer the case since my reinstalled.
What is the normal behavior for this locking scenario?
Thanks.
