The 535 printed circuit board is the same as the one in the E23 so you can rebuild a cluster with all working parts and be good to go. That is the reason I have a cluster-f**k in the basement, a 6-pack of clusters in different states of disrepair and missing parts, available to keep my two gauge clusters working.
so just when I thought I was passed my cluster stuff I have more questions :/..The cluster I received has another connector that plugs into some board on the back. Cluster came out of a 733i as well. Are there different types of clusters for these cars?
(see black and grey connector into board)

Thanks all for your help.
Finally drove the car around the block!!! Promise I will upload pictures when I get a sec, I've been squeezing getting this thing running between crazy work days!
So it looks like the cluster I bought was for a automatic car. I have a manual....anyway to make this work?
just remove the connector and prndl indicator and swap the plug that pushes into the tach with the one in your car. Hook it up and see what happens.
Note your orig has the ability to have the prndl added to it so subtracting it from the new one should get you there.
I just changed to a manual and didn't do anything to the cluster. Should work fine.

ok sounds good fellas. Maybe when I switched the gears I didn't do it correctly. I will check my work again and make sure everything is sound. I will let you guys know what happens.
Hell yeah the beast passed smog with flying colors! AS promised here are the pics of it.....

A nutria interior? I got one of those, but my car is not metallic, just beige.
Congrats,
looking good!
Well yesterday I put about 200 miles on the car and everything was going great, until.......
on my way home the clutch was not retracting back when compressed. I checked my brake reservoir this morning and it was empty. It was full in the beginning but I’m thinking since it had been sitting for a long time the lines were not full and they got filled up when I drove it around. Is it a valid statement that the slave and master cylinder use the brake reservoir?
Is there a clutch fluid cylinder next to the coolant reservoir? The 85 has separate clutch reservoir.
Check and see if the clutch master cylinder is leaking under the carpet, or if the slave cylinder is leaking under the car. I replaced both cylinders, the fluid reservoir, and the rubber line on my 733 since the master cylinder had started leaking and I was having the same problem you are. I had a custom braided stainless line made to replace the factory rubber clutch line, I have an extra one if you decide you want to replace yours. It's nice to have fresh clutch hydraulics for peace of mind!
Hmm.. I’ll check to see if there are any leaks. Is the master under the carpet like under the dash? Luckily it seems like both cylinders are pretty reasonably priced.may Ben worth to just swap them both if I end up needing to change one. Is it a pretty easy process? Like accessibility to the cylinders and stuff...
The masters are bolted to a removable plate, but they leak to the inside.
Here's a recent thread with some good pics.

He was doing a manual conversion, and I don't know if it's easier to remove the plate or not (My e23 is an automatic). I'm sure others with knowledge will be along, but this is a start.

Well, hopped under the car today and sure enough..slave cylinder leaking like a waterfall. Looks like I’ll need to change that. Luckily seems pretty cheap fix..

While i I had the hood open I noticed my coolant reservoir had a small tube coming out of it but doesn’t seem to be going anywhere, is this a breather tube ?

It's supposed to run down the driver's frame rail . It is open to the air
Steve H.
OK cool. Thanks Steve. I'll give you guys an update on my clutch and master cylinder change. getting the parts in tomorrow. Hopefully I can throw it in sometime this week.
Bleeding the slave is odd with the bleed screw pointing down.
I just gravity bleed with the nipple up slave not in car.
interesting. I think I saw that in a video for anther car slave being installed. I'll try that and see how it goes.
Slave install went well. Took about an hour to do. I decided not to change master, it looked newer so since I had no signs of it going bad I decided to leave it be. Everything seems to be working good.
for those of you who have changed hoses and such, is there any purpose of those fuel line filters on everything? I feel like those could get clogged no cause issues.. isn’t the fuel filter supposed to filter out the fuel?
Are you talking about the pulse dampers, round cad colored devices? Those can be deleted, but the germans put them there for a reason and removed them when they leak. Others remove them when they change fuel lines.
yea these things? 1891_1.png
I have mine in place in my 85 E28, they don't leak. They come out if they leak, otherwise, I'm not concerned about em
