Radio display intensity varies

I have a 2006 BMW 325 (e90). The intensity of the radio display varies (even if displaying only the time) from normal to extremely dim - and sometimes the letters and numbers are broken up to the point of being unreadable.

Thanks. I haven't been able to find the bulletin but if the solution is to replace the radio I guess it doesn't matter.
