With 185k miles I figure this next winter would be a good time to tear and rebuild my m52, it will see a lot of daily driving plus drifting and canyon runs. My plan to was to make sure the stock bottom end is good shape, have it re-ringed as needed, clean up the head, ARP studs and a cut ring headgasket and s52 cams. I will be welding my oil pump nut, and resealing the rest of the engine. Please let me know if I missed anything that I should do
Did an s52, the oil squirters were slack, one or two had no spring pressure so they would be throwing oil at low rpms and robbing pressure. They’re stupid expensive for what they are. New or low mile lifters, the old ones stick badly and the new ones are silky smooth. I put an Achilles oil baffle in the pan.
Obviously new chain guides. New top chain tensioner (they can leak and cause low press on neighboring components). You could upgrade to the S52 style lower chain tensioner ($75). Z3 style oil pickup tube for the oil pump.

Hummmm …E36 M50, S50, M52, S52 (“M”) and Zed “M” all seem to use 11411730465 Suction pipe

Check your compression before tear down. I have a 230,000 engine with 270 across the cylinders. No need to incur unneeded expenses.
If the compression is strong, and your not going fi, arp studs are a waste of time and money, cut ring gasket is a waste of time, money, and head damage. If your oil pressure is fine, your oil pressure is fine. Obviously new gaskets are a plus along with tensioners, but anything else not stock replacement on a stock engine, only complicates things more than need be.
Nobody would recertify these machines after somebody screwed with them without any visibility into what they did.

If he's going to do drifting and canyon runs I would say the upgraded Z3 oil pickup would be wise, obviously along with securing the nut. Pan baffles would be very wise too.

Man I can't find threads on our subforum for the Z3 pickup tube upgrade, but a general web search found the upgrade tube.

Could also be a good time to port your head, at least the intake ports, maybe polish them a bit, although that seems to be debatable, some say the porous surface helps mix air and fuel. Personally, I think polishing helps, but I'm no engineer. Also, good time to skim the head a bit for a small bump in compression, but I guess that's a no-no if you plan on going F/I.
Then just do everything. Lol. Better to do once than twice.
