    DMV Vanos Rebuild/Replacement Help

    Good Morning Everyone,

I have a 206k mile 1995 M3 that I have had for about 6 years now since 166,000 (See build thread: https://www.bimmerforums.com/forum/s...-to-life/page2) and am looking into doing a Vanos rebuild or replacement as well as associated "while I am there preventative maintenance" to prolong the life of the engine/car.

I know good shops in the area that I could go to, but am interested exploring the DIY for this and was wondering if there are any locals who have done this project before and would be willing to get together on a weekend and help me through it? I know there are a lot of guides and videos of this job, but for a first timer, its always nice to have knowledgeable help. Happy to compensate too, just looking to learn more hands on vs. only paying for a job to be completed. Please PM me if interested.

    Thank you!

If you were in the Kansas City area I would give you a hand doing it. I first rebuilt mine back in 2012 I think. Pretty sure it needs to be done again now. The online tutorials and Pelican Parts guide/book how to was very helpful as well.

I know you were wanting some more hands on help, but I would still go over this link for some good tips.

    are slow.
Tons of people in your area that I'm sure would give you a had for a few bucks. Buy the tools, or rent them. See sig to built them, but honestly just buy them unless you're stranded in the woods or need to double check bought tools. They are so cheap these days. Post on local Facebook grounds too, I'm sure someone can give you a hand and save you the $$$$ a shop would charge. Just be patient with the procedure and it's not bad at all.

The single VANOS is easy to time correctly, and if you have a stock flywheel, or any flywheel with the timing pin, it's even easier.

    Best of luck.

I forgot to mention that the Vanos hex bolt is reverse threaded. I snapped mine off and couldn't find the bolt anywhere. I ended up speaking with a person from Beisan Systmes and they happened to have a spare bolt.

    Dr Vanos!
    Beisansystems!

You can either buy a rebuilt unit or the kit to rebuild yours. I bought the kit and rebuilt mine. You'll want a vice to help hold the unit while torquing it back together.

    Dr Vanos!
    Beisansystems!

I have done both in a garage, very straight forward DYI.

    Beisansystems on 1995 525I and 1998 M3 S52
Dr. Vanos on 2003 Z3 Roadster.

Dr. Vanos is very easy to remove and install the complete Vanos assemble but more costly as you would expect.

Take a read on the DIY write up
    6-cylinder Single Vanos Procedure (E36, E34, E39)
    http://beisansystems.com/procedures/..._procedure.htm

Either way you WILL feel the return of low end torque to your M3.

I’ve got the tools if you need them near Westminster Md. I used the Dr Vanos, and the polished gear (stage 2), but I’m a baller...lol the hardest part is letting the engine cool. It would be a pain to try to do that hot.
No matter where you go, there you are...

The Beisan Procedure is very good. I also started using these 2 Youtube Videos. He goes a little further and take off the intake and exhaust sprockets. You don't need to do that.

    1- Take it off https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JPlKrOC718w
2 - Refer to Beisan to rebuild the VANOS
    3 - Put it back on https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=23jXHhkpV_I&t=7s
