Just done a swap on this engine. Engine was an auto, I converted it a manual, no big deal done 3 swaps before, but never had a problem like this.
No start, no crank. The fuel pump is buzzing, all the lights are on the dash radio works etc etc, but when you start the car the car, it just makes a click that's it.
I've double checked the battery terminals, all engine connections etc.
It's not my car but the owner said it was doing it before I swapped the engine over, he assumed a broken starter, but the new engine had a starter on it, chances are slim they are both dead.
Could it be the key?!?! I've read somewhere the key dies.
Cheers
The anti-theft system (EWS in BMWspeak) prevents the starter from getting exciter voltage when the key doesn’t respond with the correct security code. The ignition key has to be aligned with the EWS. Search the E46Fanatics website for the process. Also, try a second key.

I assumed that could be the case after many years ago getting my e36 broken into and changing locks and ignition barrel etc having new keys, but never getting the was or ECU from donor car. So BMW reprogrammed it all. I will have a search on the e46fanatics site. Thank you
Good to know thanks
