Good afternoon
Today I plan on getting the bell housing bolts out of the transmission so that I can continue working to pull the engine (n62).
I have read that you can disconnect the drivetrain and tilt the rear of the tranny and the bolts will become visible.
I have dropped the exhaust and the engine mounts have been unbolted. The engine is also currently connected to a hoist. The hoist is able to lift the engine a few inches currently.
- My current plan is to remove the heat shield,
- Undo the bolts connecting the output shaft to the drive shaft
- Place a floor jack under a stable point near output shaft
- Remove the mounting bracket holding the transmission up
- Slowly relieve pressure in floor jack, lowering the transmission
- hoist engine up into a tilt with the engine hoist + load leveler
- Reach upper bolts with long extensions
At least, thats how it is playing out in my head. Can anyone point out some gotchas?
Thanks!
Sounds like you've got the right idea. It's not difficult with a long extension. Don't forget about the one going from the bellhousing side into the starter.

Be sure the socket is seated squarely on the bolt. The longer the extension the more it will absorb your turning force(twist) before it can apply enough torque to break loose the bolts. It gets your attention when it finally lets go. Using 1/2" drive extensions will lessen the effect as will impact rated extensions. Did I mention seating the socket squarely?
If you can leave two black stripes from the exit of one corner to the braking zone of the next, you have enough horsepower. - Mark Donohue
Appreciated. I was able to get the engine separated and out
Didnt end up separating the drive line. Once I removed the transmission brace, I was able to tilt/lower it a few inches with a bottle jack underneath
On the reinstall, I definitely need a longer 3/8th in extension
