Charging smart phone
2014 X1 E84. Why does the manual say not to charge phone using the usb?

Can you give more context? Some BMW models have multiple USB ports. You have not indicated WHICH USB port/connector you're referring to or read about in the owners manual. If possible post the pic of the page in the owners manual. What is in the paragraphs before and after the section where you read this?
For example, I have a USB port in my f06's glove box that is intended for upload of data (like nav map upgrades...or music files to the car's hardrive etc)...but is not intended for charging a device...the USB port for doing that is inside my center armrest.
