I removed and rebuilt the DISA valve on the 2006 X3 3.0 last weekend. Most M54 DISA equipped cars such as the e46, Z3 or Z4, removal is fairly straightforward with minimal disassembly required. The e83 is a little more challenging due to several components in the way, mostly the panel that shields the brake booster from the heat of the engine.
In order to remove that panel, you must remove the following from your e83:
- Strut tower brace - 4 bolts, 2 per strut tower
- Release cable and harness from cabin filter housing - the cover snaps off of the cabin filter housing, then the wires are released as shown in the photo
- Remove cabin filter housing assembly - remove cabin filter to access the 4 captive torx bolts that hold it to the firewall
- Unfasten and separate the panel between engine and master cylinder - there are 2 twist clips that attach the panel to the chassis, one under the cabin filter, the other near the strut tower. You will need to detach the vacuum line from the brake booster, and remove the hose from the panel, The wire harness also needs to be removed from the panel and set aside. The panel is then maneuvered for release by tilting and navigating through the maze for removal
- Air filter cover / MAF sensor

Once the panel is out of the engine bay, the DISA valve can be easily removed by disconnecting the electrical connecor and 2 - T45 bolts that fasten it to the intake manifold. When removing the valve body from the manifold, take caution, it is possible that the pin that holds the flap is loose and can potentially fall into the engine. You can see the intake manifold opening where the valve was installed at the factory.

Freshly rebuilt DISA valve with rebuild kit. My valve had some play to the flap, but seemed to be mostly functional, rebuilding made this valve positively close and open 90 degrees.

Installation is reverse of removal! Hope this helps

Someone please advise if the Disa valves on M54 are same, mine is a B30, will one from a B25 or B20 work?

There are different sized DISA valves for 3.0 and 2.5 engines.
