M10 with twin 40’s

Hello

I’m after some advise on the best way to proceed with fitting Weber 40’s on my currently standard 1983 316 1.8

So as far as I’m aware fitting the Weber’s alone will not provide great results due to the small valves/ports on the m10 1.8 head

The way forward seems to be the e30 318i head

Has anyone does this that can advise me on which head I need.....

Is there a particular year to use or avoid

Is there a particular code to look for

Will fitting the e30 head require other modifications to the timing chain or other components?

Any info is greatly appreciated

Hello, using the E30 head on a E21 block needs no mods. Pistons for e30 and E21 are the same. You can use every E30 head with code 318i on it. Only thing to do is using a electric fuel pump to feed your webers. The 318i head has no holes to mount the mechanical fuel pump. Regards Andy

Hello,
cant tell you about power just with the carbs. Mine was a complete change and it was all done together. I used the E30 / 318i head (bit ported and smoothed out), Weber 40 DCOE, a Schrick 292 cam and Martelius 2" exhaust in combination with a Alpina A4 replica downpipe what was done for a 2002 and needs minor mods. With all that stuff i got 122 hp at the rear wheels. I think with head and carbs only you could expect around 12 to 15hp more. The numbers let you not see how much more free the engines feels now. It revs over 4k with a totally new speed till redline. First three days i was only driving around with a big fat smile every time i hit the pedal.
