Any ideas on what this is for?

Hi! I started trying to fit a number plate filler strip this morning and realised I had something going on behind the bumper. Removed it and found this bar attached between the two bumper struts. Anyone have any ideas what this is about, and whether it's necessary?

    Thanks

Shown on RealOEM but NLA so no idea what they call it, but obviously there to strengthen the bumper and distribute crash loads between the two bump absorbers.

That keeps the aluminum bumper (and subsequently, the front half of the car) from ripping in half in the event of a collision. If the car was to hit a utility pole or a tree for example it would cause a lot more damage without that piece in there. Aluminum is brittle, steel has tensile strength

I don't think this was a factory thing by any means. Thanks so much for the feedback folks, much appreciated!

It's very much a factory part. #21 in the diagram https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/sho...diagId=51_0551

wow, they have the part numbers listed for white, black, and blue bumper fillers. I wonder if any of those are available new anywhere

That's for covering caps that go on the license plate screws. You'll also need the corresponding screws since they're made to fit each other. Order extra caps since they usually get damaged taking them back off.
