Hi there
I own an X1 and have owned X3's all manual, diesels until last year when I moved abroad and have been driving a Santa Fe. All BMWs have been great in snow as I lived in Switzerland and am moving back there. We used to drive up the most incredibly steep and windy, snowy roads where others were taking cable cars up to work. Interestingly the 2nd generation 2013 X3 was not as good as the 2008 X3, but still very good.
I'm now looking to buy another X3, but also considering a second generation X5. I am considering getting an automatic for the X3 and it is almost certain for the X5, as they are more widely available in Switzerland. Could anyone tell me:
With the X3
- does the 2.0 litre manual engine last longer than the 3.0 litre one? I heard a BMW mechanic say they did but I wasn't sure why?
- if automatic, is the 3.0 litre better?
- diesel engines last longer than petrol ones?
- manual gearbox less maintenance and cheaper to service than automatic?
- is the manual better in snow than the automatic?
With the X5 automatic (same questions really)
- is the 3.0 litre engine last longer than the the bigger 4.0 litre?
- diesel engine last longer than petrol?
- automatic goes well up and down hills in snow?
Any other tips?
Many thanks for your advice.
